Claudius Galen (130โ200 AD) is considered the Father of Compounding. He fundamentally elevated the profession by transitioning medicine away from purely magical folklore into a systematized science of galenicalsโmedicines derived from natural crude materials via physical extraction. Galen personally formulated hundreds of remedies, including a legendary 64-ingredient universal antidote called Theriac that was so highly revered, European pharmacists were legally required to compound it in public view well into the 18th century to prove they weren't cheating the recipe.
He is also credited with inventing the world's first cold cream (Ceratum Refrigerans), a physical emulsion of rosewater, olive oil, and beeswax that utilized the latent heat of vaporization to cool the skin.Beyond his specific recipes, Galen's ultimate contribution to pharmacy practice was creating the methodical framework for formulation and compounding science.
He established the foundational vocabulary still used in pharmaceutics today, including the menstruum (the active solvent system) and the marc (the exhausted plant sludge left behind). His early focus on vehicle selection, mass-transfer kinetics, and adjusting ingredient ratios to modify a drug's effects laid the groundwork for modern biopharmaceutics. By standardizing how raw botanical materials are processed into safe, predictable doses, galenicals are still part of present modern-day pharmacy practice, directly underpinning personalized compounding, modern phytomedicine standardization, and customized drug delivery.
