Update on the Options for
The UP Board of Regents did not reach a consensus in its meeting today on how the admissions to the university for academic year 2021-2022 will be implemented due to many concerns and reservations. Another briefing on the options will be conducted in the coming weeks after the Office of Admissions comes up with a new report with further studies and consultations.
The UP Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the UP Office of Admissions presented the options and recent developments for UPCAT 2021 earlier. Based on their report, the University Councils, the highest academic bodies in the respective UP units across the UP System, voted to cancel the UPCAT exam component for freshman admission for the next academic year. This is mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic where concerns revolve around health and safety risks, huge logistical and manpower challenges for at least 92 testing centers, health insurance, quarantine, hazard pay, and more.
Instead, a revised admission system is proposed to be implemented where an Admission Score Model shall be conceptualized, studied, and finalized in the coming months. This aims to have the following characteristics: 1) Evidence-based MODEL using HS academic performance (standardized) 2) Additional layer of assessment at the department/institute level 3) Mindful of equity, inclusivity, and diversity. A process for this was also proposed including the revisiting of the history of UP admission policies over the years, creating three component committees to mold a holistic model, and accomplishing a series of consultations with the UP units.
Again, nothing is final yet and the University Councils and concerned offices of UP are to discuss the matter again.
We are one with the general public in calling for the most inclusive and compassionate solutions that the university can offer for its admissions during a time like this. The university must exhaust all means to ensure that the admission system that will be implemented will be fair and will accept applicants at a maximum number, giving utmost consideration for the marginalized and those gravely affected by the economic crisis. Our present situation with the pandemic has thoroughly exposed the inaccessibility of education in our country, with UP included. This serves as a reminder for us as well that the fight for safe, free, accessible, quality education is far from over.
Kabataan, ipaglaban ang ating karapatan sa edukasyon!
Edukasyon, karapatan ng mamamayan!
