40th Founding Anniversary of Giovanni Battista Leonardi School
Yesterday’s Eucharistic Celebration was a beautiful reminder of grace upon grace. Words can hardly capture what we experienced as one community—past and present students, former and current parents, the faithful presence of the SMdC Sisters, our dedicated teachers and staff, and our priest celebrant, an alumnus of GBLS.
For forty years, it has been God’s grace that sustained our school—guiding us, strengthening us, and allowing something beautiful to grow from humble beginnings.
Dear Leonardians, we may be small and few, yet it is God’s grace that makes us strong. As Fr. Ian reminded us in his homily, even a small ember can grow into a blazing fire. Let us be that small fire—bringing and sharing the light of Jesus wherever we are. Above all, we thank God, who continues to guide and sustain us, now and always.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Giovanni Battista Leonardi, a man who redefined nobility through the lens of service. While his title was born of aristocracy, his heart belonged to the people. Faced with the stark realities of Trecate, Italy, Leonardi refused to let his wealth fade with his lineage; instead, he saw a divine opportunity to change history.
By dedicating his estate to the Vincentian mission of "charity in action," he and Fr. Pietro De Luigi planted a vital seed: the Sister Handmaids of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. What began as one man’s quiet resolve has now blossomed into a global fruit, with SMdC sisters across the world carrying out life-changing ministries.
We see this fruit most clearly in our own community at Giovanni Battista Leonardi School (GBLS). Named in his honor, our school stands as a living testament to his belief that education and compassion are the greatest gifts one can leave behind. On his feast day, we celebrate a man of wisdom who transformed his privilege into a perpetual sanctuary for the marginalized.
Giovanni Battista Leonardi left us a blueprint for a life well-lived. Now, the responsibility shifts to us. As Leonardians, we are the stewards of his flame. Today, we commit ourselves anew to the journey he began nearly three hundred years ago, ensuring his legacy of love never grows cold.
