In recent decades, an increasing number of scholars based within Southeast Asia have been developing region specific in-depth research agendas arising from concerns in the field. These have led to data driven approaches attuned to the exigencies within the region based on realities on the ground. Increasingly, these approaches have incorporated interdisciplinary techniques developed by scholars who research across multiple disciplines. These have led to innovative discussions fostering new directions in research that incorporate both social and natural science perspectives and techniques.

The conference brings together scholars who work across interdisciplinary divides based at Kyoto University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) and the Ateneo de Manila University’s School of Social Sciences and School of Science and Engineering. It provides an opportunity to introduce CSEAS’ area studies approach to research and share Ateneo de Manila University’s research initiatives to integrate the social and the natural sciences with an area studies framework. It is hoped that the conference will stimulate discussion on natural/science research methodology conducted in Southeast Asia and foster dialogues between both institutions.
