UP-IESM

UP-IESM Established in 2003, the Institute of Environmental Science & Meteorology (IESM) is an academic unit of the UP Diliman College of Science.

Established in 2003, The Institute of Environmental Science & Meteorology, or IESM, is an academic unit of the College of Science in the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Created by merging the Environmental Science Program (ESP) and the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography (DMO), IESM is envisioned as a leading center for environmental and atmospheric sciences in the Asia Pacific. The

institute focuses on understanding natural phenomena that influence key decisions on sustainable development in the Philippines and the region. IESM is dedicated to advancing the study of human impacts on the environment, predicting weather and climate patterns, and managing atmospheric and hydro-meteorological hazards. The institute now has 12 full-time faculty members, 5 professorial lecturers, and a growing number of Adjunct Professors. Since relocating to a new facility in 2014, IESM‘s research activities have significantly expanded

In December 2015, IESM was named a Center of Excellence for Environmental Science by the Commission on Higher Education. Additionally, in partnership with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), IESM serves as a Regional Training Center for the World Meteorological Organization Region.

Assistant Professor Enrico L. Replan of the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM) participated in the 5th International Conference on International Security and the Environment (ISE 2026) on 21 August 2026 at Kantary Hills Hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand. With the theme “Navigating Conflicts and Global Challenges,” the conference was hosted by the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration of Chiang Mai University, in collaboration with the College of Public Affairs and Policy of Khon Kaen University and the Faculty of Political Science of Burapha University.

At the conference, Replan presented his paper, “Balancing Nature and Nurture: Understanding People’s Willingness to Conserve the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services of Lagonoy Natural Biotic Area (LNBA).” The conference featured paper sessions on green and sustainable development, emerging environmental challenges, security and political dynamics, and energy, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence transformation.

Replan’s presentation focused on people’s willingness to conserve the biodiversity and ecosystem services of the Lagonoy Natural Biotic Area, bringing an environmental science and biodiversity conservation perspective to the conference discussions.

Laguna de Bay lakeshore grasslands show moderate plant diversity, localized vegetation patterns

Lakeshore grasslands in Barangays San Antonio and Tagumpay, Bay, Laguna, were found to support moderately diverse plant communities dominated by grasses and other disturbance-tolerant species. In a recently published study, IESM faculty member Assistant Professor Enrico L. Replan, PhD documented 35 plant species from 18 genera and 10 families, with the grass family Poaceae forming the main structural component of the vegetation. The study also found localized variation in species composition and diversity across sampling areas, with no significant spatial autocorrelation.
