According to an age-old belief rooted in a mix of folklore and Catholic influence, ang Unang Ulan ng Mayo, Agua de Mayo, or the rains of May, is said to hold healing powers that can cure illnesses, boost the immune system, and keep people healthy all year.
For farming communities, its arrival meant something more grounded: rain in May signaled the start of the wet season and the promise of a good harvest. But in the Philippines of today, what does Agua de Mayo actually bring?
Folk knowledge and science-based data are not in competition. At their best, they are in conversation, and listening to both makes us more prepared.

With the establishment of baseline datasets, the project provides the evidence-based foundation needed for impact assessment. These outputs will support Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC) to transition from general planning to highly targeted, data-driven resilience strategies for its assets to ensure business continuity.
The completed database will yield a validated, organized inventory of exposure units, complete with sensitivity and adaptive capacity indicators of 52 facilities across Metro Manila, including assets of Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), Maynilad Water Services, Inc., Meralco, and LRT-1 Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC).

Dr. Arnaldo Antonio, Head of the Valenzuela City Disaster Risk Reduction And Management Office (VCDRRMO), highlighted the importance of the city's collaboration with UP NOAH Center during the Participatory Hazard Assessment Workshop. He mentioned that the workshop will be a great help in identifying effective and sustainable flood mitigation solutions for the city. Dr. Mahar Lagmay, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of LOCAL KNOWLEDGE and INSIGHTS in validating flood models and in developing a SCIENCE-BASED, COMMUNITY-DRIVEN Drainage Master Plan.

The session brings together researchers, students, and practitioners to explore data-driven, people-centered approaches to understanding and forecasting climate-induced displacement in Asia and the Pacific.
