In celebration of the UP College of Media and Communication's 60th Anniversary and the Department of Communication Research's 50th Anniversary, the Office of Research and Publication and Department of Communication Research proudly present the lecture, "Elevating Communication as Scholarship: The Enduring and Evolving Legacy of the UP Department of Communication Research" by Professor Violeda A. Umali on April 7, 1:00-4:00pm at the CMC Auditorium.
This lecture traces how the UP Department of Communication Research pioneered and sustains the valuation of communication as a discipline that can – as stated in the Department’s vision – meaningfully contribute to a better understanding of people's symbolic and structural environment, and to the search for critical and creative solutions and innovations towards societal development. This legacy may be characterized in two ways: a) first, in terms of the Department’s dynamic and agile programs on instruction, research and publication, and extension, which could be considered as the catalysts of this legacy and b) second, in terms of the involvements and accomplishments of the Department’s faculty, students, and alumni beyond the academe, which affirm and advance the importance of communication scholarship.
Violeda A. Umali, PhD is a retired Professor of Communication Research at the UP College of Media and Communication. She served as the Director of the Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Director of the Research Dissemination and Utilization Office at UP Diliman. Dr. Umali has master’s degrees in demography from the UP Population Institute (UPPI) and in mass communication from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. She earned her PhD in Political Science from the University of Vienna.

We are pleased to announce that Plaridel Journal Volume 22, Issue 02 (July-December 2025) is now available at
https://www.plarideljournal.org/theme/resonant-legacy-media/
The theme of this issue is: "Resonant Legacy Media." Follow the link above and see how "these contributions invite readers to think of radio booths, film frames, television robots, and idol stages as connected sites where voices and bodies are trained, displayed, and politicized. The special issue’s movement from campus radio to sports-talk, from analog FM to streaming apps, from a cloistered nun on screen to a giant robot in diplomatic tweets, and from an idol group on YouTube to handshake events sketches a genealogy of media forms that refuse to stay in the past. Legacy media are not fading; they echo inside new platforms and fandoms, carrying with them histories of education, religion, diplomacy, and desire." (Excerpt from Dr. Patrick F. Campos's Note as the issue editor)
