Jaime Cardinal Sin, the 30th Archbishop of Manila, played a pivotal role in the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, which led to the end of President Ferdinand Marcos's 20-year rule. Recognizing the growing unrest and the defection of key military leaders, Cardinal Sin made a courageous appeal over Radio Veritas, urging Filipinos to gather peacefully in support of the rebels. His call inspired millions to converge on EDSA, armed with prayers and rosaries, in a remarkable display of nonviolent resistance that ultimately restored democracy in the Philippines.
In 1985, Cardinal Sin further demonstrated his commitment to nurturing the nation's moral and spiritual fabric by launching the Marian Youth Movement (MYM). This Catholic movement aimed to engage young people, particularly those aged 12 to 24 from public high schools within the Ecclesiastical Province of Manila, in a dynamic pursuit of peace and spiritual growth. Inspired by the words of St. Louis de Montfort, the MYM sought to spread genuine Marian devotion and foster a spiritual rebirth among the youth, aligning with the Department of Education's objectives of uplifting moral values in the public school sector.
Through these initiatives, Cardinal Sin not only played a crucial role in the nation's political transformation but also laid the foundation for a renewed, Christ-centered community of young disciples committed to personal and societal transformation.
