LARRY ALCALA 100 YEARS: Tribute Exhibit & 100 Komikeros

The exhibit honors Larry Alcala’s commitment to education through a series of specialized cartooning workshops. In partnership with the UP Department of Visual Communication and the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas, organizers invited students from JASMS QC (with JASMS Manila) to participate.

Last Sept. 12, 2026, a group of 10 students, consisting of five elementary and five high school students, took part in the learning sessions.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Mr. Hugo “Boboy” Yonzon, and our Executive Director, Mrs. Remedios H. Cruz, for the opportunity to visit this nostalgic exhibit and witness the humor, heart, and socio-political wit that shaped Filipino comic history.

Music Hall (1:30-5:00 PM): For the elementary students aged 8 to 10 years old, illustrators Ardie Aquino, Giodesk Guiao, and Celso Quijano Jr. expounded on character design, comic strips, and basic cartooning.

Ballroom (9:30-5:00 PM): Comic artists Boboy Yonzon, Barry Jose, and Mike Yonzon discussed the complexity of expressing thoughts through cartoons.

Mr. Hugo “Boboy” Yonzon is JASMS QC Alumnus himself.

ADVISORY

In light of Malacañang Memorandum Circular No. 135 implementing alternative learning modes in NCR amid the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), classes in ALL LEVELS and in all PWU and PWU-JASMS campuses shall shift to synchronous online modality today, September 10, 2026.

Work operations in all PWU and PWU-JASMS campuses shall continue onsite as scheduled. However, faculty with reliable internet connectivity may conduct their classes remotely, unless otherwise directed by their respective Academic heads.

The University shall continue to monitor the weather situation and issue further announcements as necessary.

In line with the announcements of the Local Governments of Manila and Quezon City suspending face-to-face classes in all levels due to inclement weather, all onsite/face-to-face classes at PWU Taft and PWU-JASMS Manila and Quezon City campuses shall shift to synchronous online modality today , September 08, 2026.

Work operations at PWU Taft and PWU-JASMS Manila and Quezon City campuses shall continue onsite as scheduled.

The University shall continue to monitor the weather situation and issue further announcements as necessary.
