What to do after you become a Christian?

Hebrews 12:1-2 (KJV)

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The will of God is for us His children to grow in our knowledge of the word and to experience His grace every day.

The good start is by being baptized in water (Acts 2:41,42).

The next is to take daily the "milk of the word" ( 1 Pet. 2:1,2; 2 Tim. 2:15). Have time to study His word. This can be done personally or in a group worship in the church.

The third is to be alert of the sin and to avoid it (Heb. 12:1). Let us arm ourselves with prayer.

The fourth is to run the spiritual race with patience (12:1). Fight a good fight of faith. Prioritize spiritual things.

The fifth is to lock our spiritual eyes on Jesus. He alone is the perfect example and model. He must be the object and reason for our struggles.

As newly born believers, we have to grow in faith, in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord on a daily basis.

Faith is ascribing creation to God

Hebrews 11:3 (KJV)

Through faith we understand
that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

The "best explanation" of the existence of life, order, design, biodiversity, complexities, interdependence in nature to maintain balance, and the family of animals producing its kind is a Supernatural Being.

If there is no God, how can something exist from nothing?
How can life originate from non-life? How can nature create order and design by itself? How can a disorder due to an explosion create order?

In all these questions, the best explanation is the Almighty God who created all these things with life, design and order amidst existing complexities.

The Believer has to endure sufferings

Hebrews 10:38-39 (KJV)

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Salvation is all of God (Phil. 1:6). This means that God wholly started it, maintains it and completes it. (Phil. 1:6; Eph. 2:8-9; Tit. 3:5).

But to live the faith requires man's contribution. He has to struggle to resist the devil so he will flee. He has to mortify the deeds of the body. He has to not conform to this world. He has to submit every imagination and thought of his heart to the obedience of Christ. He had to put on the whole armor of God(Eph. 6:10-18.).

He has to fight a good fight of faith and never turn back. Those who draw back are really not true believers. Only the genuine children of God will persevere (2 Tim. 4;6-8).

The fearsome God

Hebrews 10:31 (KJV)
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

As a Judge, God's concern is to impose a penalty on sinners who rejected Him during their lifetime. He is not a respecter of persons. He only sees their sins and their corresponding penalty. But today, He is still a loving, gracious and merciful God. He is willing to save them to the uttermost to them who come to God by Him.

Come to God today because He is still full of mercy and grace today. During the Great White Throne Judgment, He will be a fearsome Judge.

There is no more offering for sin

Hebrews 10:9-12, 14 (KJV)

Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Only the blood of Jesus has the power to cleanse us from all our sins. It is exclusive which means there is nothing more, there is no other way.

Eternal redemption and eternal inheritance

Hebrews 9:11-15 (KJV)

But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

The salvation that the Lord Jesus Christ secured at the cross is an eternal salvation of the soul (Hebrews 5:9). He gives this to all who trust.

He also gives them eternal redemption (v. 12). This means that they have nothing more to pay. Christ paid in full the penalty of their sins.

He also gives eternal inheritance ( v. 15). This means that all those who trust Christ are heirs of heaven.

These are not temporal blessings. They are eternal. Yes, they are endless. And the way to receive them is by faith in Christ and His finished work at the cross.

The Visible Temple is a Proof of God's willingness to live with Humans

Hebrews 9:1-5 (KJV)

Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.

For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.

And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;

Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

God loves man because he carries with him the "DNA" of God. He wants to dwell with His people.

First His presence was in the garden of Eden where Adam and Eve were. Then He commanded the making of the Tabernacle which is a temporary place of worship. Later He commanded the building of a temple which is a permanent structure where the Jews could meet God in worship.

However, when Jesus died at the cross, the veil of the temple was torn down. God abolished it. The temple was likewise destroyed by General Titus on AD 70.

This means that the presence of God does not anymore dwell in the temple and in the holy things but in the body of each believer through the Holy Spirit. (Eph. 1:13;4:30; Romans 6:9;16; 1 Cor. 6:19); Gal. 4:4-6).

This happens when a person hears the gospel of Christ, trust Him through that gospel, and rely on the completeness of Christ's atoning work through the shedding of His blood, His death, burial and resurrection.

God wants to live in His people that is why He abolished the physical temple. He wants to dwell in the body of His people as His temple on earth.

When teaching ministry will be no more

Hebrews 8:10-12 (KJV)

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

This passage tells us of a time when the teaching ministry of the church will cease. God Himself will be One who will reveal His word to all His people. The things they they do not understand will be clear to them.

It is still a future time. Since we are not yet there, the marching order of God to all is to "study, search, meditate, rightly divide, obey and do" the word of God. There is no excuse.

Eternal salvation and eternal priesthood

Hebrews 7:22-25 (KJV)

By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:

But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Human priests have to offer the blood of animal sacrifices daily in the temple because they are mortals (Hebrews 10:11).

But Jesus being God in the flesh and being the Lamb of God, offered Himself and shed His blood once and for all (Hebrews 10:14)

He also brought His blood to heaven and offered it at the Tabernacle in heaven in order to ensure eternal redemption to everyone who trusts Him as his saviour (Hebrews 9:12).

Because the priesthood of Christ abides forever, He can save them to the uttermost ( eternally) all of them who put their trust in Him and on the completeness of the redemption that He accomplished at the cross.(Hebrews 5:9).

God word is steadfast because He cannot lie

Hebrews 6:18-19 (KJV)

That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

"Promises are made to be broken." We hear this often. Man promises and he reneges to fulfill it. This is a characteristic of man. But the Living God is different. He promises and He fulfills it to the very letter.

God cannot promise and fails to fulfill it because if that were true, He becomes a liar, a sinner and not perfect.

This is one of the reasons to believe in His promise of eternal salvation (Heb. 5:9). Because He promised eternal life and eternal sonship, those who believe and trust His finished work at Calvary can trust in this promise of salvation. (Eph. 1:7, 13; 1 John 5:11-13; John 10:27-29; 14:1-3; 1 Thess. 4:13-18). Those who disbelieve it makes Him a liar.

God's word can be trusted because He is a promise- fulfilling God.
