ARCo: Architectural Research Colloquium

In celebration of 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 alongside the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, ARCo 2026 joins in recognizing the stories, traditions, and cultural histories that continue to shape our shared future. Guided by this year’s theme, “Roots and Horizons: Our Shared Heritage, Our Collective Future,” we reflect on the role of heritage and culture in shaping spaces, communities, and the evolving built environment.

Maria Alexandra Iñigo Chua is a Professor of Musicology at the University of Santo Tomas and currently serves as Dean of the Conservatory of Music. She was a Research Fellow at the Departamento de Musicología, Facultad de Geografía e Historia, Universidad Complutense de Madrid from 2015–2016.

𝗜𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗦. 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀, 𝗣𝗵𝗗
Ivan Anthony Henares is the Secretary-General of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, Commissioner of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and Associate Professor at the UP Asian Institute of Tourism. He currently serves as President of the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee, Chairperson of the Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Alliance, Chairperson of the Heritage Conservation Society, and Philippine Committee President of the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage.

Rosella Leah K. Rivera is a sociologist and development studies scholar by academic training (PhD, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Hague, The Netherlands; AB/MA Sociology, UP Diliman), a researcher by profession, and a feminist by heart. She is a recently retired Professor from the Department of Women and Development Studies, College of Social Work and Community Development, UP Diliman.

𝗘𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗹 𝗔𝗴𝗼𝗼, 𝗣𝗵𝗗
Dr. Agoo is a Full Professor in the Biology Department of De La Salle University specializing in botanical systematics, plant ecology, and biodiversity conservation. She earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in Biology from De La Salle University, with advanced training in orchid taxonomy in the Netherlands and plant conservation in the United States and United Kingdom, and completed her B.S. in Biological Sciences at University of the Philippines Manila.

With only one week remaining before ARCo 2026, this year’s colloquium gathers architects, scholars, practitioners, and students in a critical exploration of “ganháan” — a theme centered on perception, interpretation, and the evolving ways spatial realities are understood.

More than the study of buildings and form, architecture is approached here as a way of thinking: a discipline shaped through observation, memory, movement, and the continuous negotiation of perspective. “Ganháan” invites participants to reconsider how spaces are read, experienced, and imagined across social, cultural, and disciplinary boundaries.

How might architecture be rethought when seeing itself becomes a form of inquiry?

ARCo 2026 convenes scholars, practitioners, and students under the theme “ganháan,” treating perception not as a neutral act but as a critical condition through which architectural knowledge is produced. The colloquium examines how shifts in vantage point, whether conceptual, spatial, or disciplinary, recalibrate the ways in which the built environment is understood, articulated, and engaged.

Positioned at the intersection of design research and critical discourse, ganháan frames architecture as a field shaped as much by interpretation as by construction. It emphasizes the act of seeing as an intellectual practice, one that reveals the contingencies, assumptions, and possibilities embedded in space and form.

This year, the Architectural Research Colloquium 2026 centers on “𝗚𝗔𝗡𝗛𝗔́𝗔𝗡: 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀,” a theme that rethinks the doorway as more than a point of entry. Drawn from Hiligaynon and Waray, ganháan refers to a door or entrance, but it also points to something more layered. It suggests a threshold where movement, perception, and interaction take shape, and where boundaries are constantly being formed and questioned.

As a lens, ganháan encourages us to look closely at how architecture mediates relationships between inside and outside, public and private, and individual and collective. The door becomes a space of negotiation, where cultural meanings, environmental conditions, and everyday spatial practices meet. In these moments of passage, architecture reveals its role not just as form, but as a way of making connections and differences visible.

ARCo 2026 invites research-driven conversations on how new ideas in architecture emerge at points of transition. It is in these in-between spaces, where movement and encounter overlap, that fresh perspectives surface. The colloquium explores thresholds as both material and metaphor, examining how architecture shapes how we enter, move through, and understand space.
