Throwback Monday | HUMSS 12 José 🥉 2nd Runner-up, RecycParol Making Contest
—
HUMSS 12 José’s Parol is called “Pasko sa Pinas.” This parol used the colors of the Philippine National Flag; yellow, red, and blue. This parol showcases the Philippines’ christmas culture and highlights the Filipino’s resiliency amidst challenges. Additionally, this parol is made during the fight of jeepney drivers in the Philippines, alongside with the emergence of the movement.
This parol is not just an entry for the competition— this is a call and an advocacy against those who are pushing to extinct the appearance of PUVs in the Philippine highways and streets. Jeepneys are part of the Phillipine history and is something that Filipino’s should not forget and erase as this continuously serves the Filipino people all throughout the country.

LOOK: HUMSS 12 José HOPE 3 Folk Dance Presentation
—
Earlier this afternoon, October 11, 2023, HUMSS 12 José executed their folk dance performance and presentation, a performance task and fulfillment requirement for their Health Optimizing Physical Education (HOPE) 3 Course under the advisory of Mrs. Maria Cristina Maynigo.
The first group, headed by Ivan Yry G. Alcantara, performed Sagayan Folk Dance. Sagayan is a unique ‘war dance’ from the Philippines. It is mainly performed by the Maguindanao and the Maranao tribal community which demonstrates the Maguindanaoans’ zeal to defend their communities from any kind of exploitation or conquest.
Next, the group headed by Ma. Ezhra Kaye Aguilar performed Cariñosa. This dance is a South East Asian dance style from the Philippines. Cariñosa in English literally means, ‘Loving or affectionate one.’ This ‘romantic’ Philippine dance originated in the Panay Island in the colonial-era from the Maria Clara suite of Philippine folk dances and is supposed to be heavily influenced by Hispanic culture.
Third, Binatbatan Occupational Folk Dance was highlighted by Christian Lloyd Delante’s group. The dance Binatbatan originally cane from Paoay, Ilocos Norte. This characterized by a variety of activities that are related to the Ilocanos’ way of living. The dance also describes the beating of cotton pods as the seeds are separated from the fibers with the use of two sticks called ‘batbat.’
And lastly, Frinzes Nhyzel De Guzman's group presented Alitaptap Folk Dance. Alitaptap is a Philippine Folk Dance that originated from the province of Batangas, and is native to the Tagalogs. The term ‘alitaptap’ refers to an insect (firefly) which flies only at night and looks like it carries a lamp. This dance simply mimics the movement of a firefly.
