GIMMICK - n. (Standard English) a trick or a device used to attract attention, publicity, or business; (slang) a night out with friends (from the Filipino word "gimik")
Fun Facts:
☝It can cause cross-cultural confusion: Because the meaning shifted so drastically in the Philippines, inviting a foreign colleague out for a "gimmick" might confuse them—they might think you are planning a scam, a prank, or a cheap marketing trick!
☝It is often used as a verb: While it is a noun in English, Filipinos frequently turn it into a verb in Taglish. Saying "Gimik tayo!" (Let's go on a gimmick!) is a very common way to initiate weekend plans.
☝The "Gimikero" and "Gimikera": A person who is always out socializing, constantly attends parties, or is heavily involved in the nightlife scene is often teased as a gimikero (for men) or gimikera (for women).
