In celebration of National Disability Rights Week, the University of the Philippines Center for Education and Development (UP CEDEV) reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive and accessible education through a dialogue with the Filipino Sign Language (FSL) National Network, exploring opportunities to strengthen Deaf education and promote Filipino Sign Language (FSL) in the Philippines.
During the meeting, Dr. Liza Martinez, Convenor, and members of the FSL Network shared the challenges faced by the Deaf community, including limited access to inclusive learning environments, ineffective teaching approaches, and the lack of standardized FSL interpreting in the workplace. The discussion also highlighted the need for more research on Deaf education, particularly on first-language acquisition of Filipino Sign Language among Deaf children.
The meeting also revisited the implementation of the Filipino Sign Language Act (Republic Act No. 11106), which recognizes the University of the Philippines' role in advancing FSL through research, instruction, and workplace training.
