Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Guillermo E. Tolentino
Born in 1890 in Malolos, Bulacan, Tolentinoโs journey to artistic excellence was marked by perseverance. In 1919, he sailed to the United States with only seven dollars in his pocket, working as a waiter in Washington, D.C. to support himself. His talent eventually led to an audience with U.S. President Woodrow Wilson after presenting a statue entitled โPeaceโ. This encounter opened opportunities that enabled him to pursue advanced studies in New York and later in Rome, where he graduated with highest honors and earned international recognition for his work.
Upon returning to the Philippines, Tolentino devoted nearly three decades to the University of the Philippines, serving as an instructor, Director of the School of Fine Arts (1953โ1956), and later as Professor Emeritus. Throughout his distinguished career, he created some of the country's most enduring public monuments, notably UPโs ๐๐ฃ๐ญ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ด ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ง๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ฐ ๐๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต ๐ช๐ฏ ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ค๐ข๐ฏ; busts of prominent Filipinos such as ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ถ๐ฆ๐ญ ๐. ๐๐ถ๐ฆ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฏ, ๐๐ฐ๐ด๐ฆ ๐๐ช๐ป๐ข๐ญ, ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ด ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ง๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ฐ; and the medal of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards. Through these works, he immortalized the ideals of patriotism, heroism, and love for the nation.
His remarkable contributions to Philippine art earned him numerous distinctions, including the (1973). Its members conduct spiritual gatherings and sรฉances to communicate with benevolent spirits, including Philippine national heroes like Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio.
Tolentino passed away on 12 July 1976, just twelve days before his 86th birthday. In recognition of his invaluable contributions to Philippine art and culture, he was laid to rest at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. More than four decades after his passing, his sculptures continue to stand as enduring symbols of Filipino identity, patriotism, and artistic excellence, inspiring generations to appreciate the nationโs rich cultural heritage.
