UNSTOPPABLE EALA! Filipino tennis star battles rain, rallies past rival to reach Birmingham Open final

MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala moved one win away from a championship after overcoming Swiss challenger Rebeka Masarova in a dramatic three-set semifinal at the Birmingham Open early Sunday (Manila time).

The top-seeded Filipina showcased her resilience, defeating Masarova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, in a match marked by momentum swings and lengthy rain interruptions.

Eala entered the semifinal in dominant form, having swept through her first three opponents without dropping a set. She looked headed for another routine victory after taking the opening frame with ease.

Masarova, however, fought back in the second set and forced the match into a decider, turning what initially appeared to be a straightforward outing into Eala’s toughest challenge of the tournament.

Adding to the drama were multiple rain delays that repeatedly halted play and tested both players’ focus and endurance.

Despite the interruptions, Eala remained composed and stayed in control when action resumed. Leading 5-2 in the deciding set before another weather stoppage, she returned to finish the job and secure a berth in her first final of the season.

“Really happy with the win today. It was such a great experience,” Eala said after the match.

She also credited Masarova for pushing her to the limit.

“It was such a tough battle today. You’ll never know what’s gonna happen. Rebeka played really well, and she put me in tough spots,” she said.

Eala closed out the contest after weathering one final push from Masarova in the ninth game of the third set.

The 21-year-old now advances to the championship round, where she will face Czech player Nikola Bartunkova for the title.

With momentum on her side and confidence growing, Eala believes the grueling semifinal has prepared her for the challenge ahead.

“Reaching the final is a physical feat. I’m feeling good. I think today was a great test and I’ll be ready for tomorrow,” she said.
