The term "anachronism" is derived from Greek origins. It combines "ana" (meaning "against") and "chronos" (meaning "time"). Therefore, "anachronism" literally means "against time" or "out of time."

An anachronism is something that is out of its proper chronological or historical order. It refers to the inclusion of an element in a story, artwork, or situation that doesn't belong to the time period being depicted.
