Coffee Science Center
Coffee Science Center is a 13-time AVPA Award-Winning coffee learning institution. Here, we hope to bring forth a different kind of learning.
What makes Coffee Science Center different from other institutions of coffee learning is the importance it places on coffee origins, apart from protocols, and the science behind coffee practices. The coffee producer's role is primordial in choosing which varieties to grow and which roasting method and preparation to use to bring out the full aromatic and tasting profile of the coffee. A Grande Moment: Philippine Coffee Triumphs in Paris
PARIS 18 September 2025 — Carrying three award-winning brands, The Coffee Heritage Project once again made a mark at the prestigious AVPA (Agence pour la Valorisation des Produits Agricoles) Paris Coffee Show on 15 September 2025. From a field of over 200 entries judged through blind taste testing, 85 outstanding coffees were awarded — and Philippine beans stood proudly among them.
SGD Coffee (Mary Tomeg, Andrew Tomeg, and Felipa Villicana) captured the highest honour with the Médaille Gourmet Or (Gold Medal), followed by Tayao Farms, which received the Médaille Gourmet Argent (Silver Medal), and the Madongo Coffee Growers Association with Tomeg-Villicana Farms, which earned the Médaille Gourmet Bronze (Bronze Medal).
Representing these celebrated producers, the Philippine Embassy in Paris stood alongside them in showcasing the richness of Philippine coffee craftsmanship.
In his address, AVPA President Philippe Juglar acknowledged the presence of the diplomatic corps, underscoring the event as a prime example of how economic and cultural diplomacy go hand in hand.

CSC Portraits: Coffee's Next Generation of Farmers
Over the years, Coffee Science Center along with its partner organization The Coffee Heritage Project has been getting more coffee enthusiasts interested on where their coffees come from, and in volunteering for seasonal work at local coffee origins.
It is truly an inspiring scene seeing both coffee growers and enthusiasts working alongside at the farm.

CSC Portraits: Dr Rajeev Roychand, Coffee Conrete Anyone?
CSC Portraits shares stories of people shaping the future of coffee, and a behind-the-scenes look at some of the fascinating work people are doing for a better coffee future.
Every year, concrete used in construction projects relies on extracting 55 billion tons of natural sand. Sadly, this sand is often sourced from river beds and banks, which disrupts the natural environment. So, replacing sand with spent coffee grounds (SCG) could solve two ecological problems at once, since SCG are similarly fine particles.
Lead author Dr Rajeev Roychand from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University said the team developed a technique to make concrete 30% stronger by turning waste coffee grounds. Published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, the study by RMIT engineers is the first to prove that waste coffee grounds can be used to improve concrete.
