UP Science and Mathematics Majors Advocating Responsible Teaching

𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 tell stories, 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 shape discoveries, and behind countless breakthroughs in mathematics are 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

This 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲, UP SMMART joins the global celebration of women who have contributed to the growth of mathematics, research, education, and innovation despite the barriers they have faced throughout history. Their work continues to open doors for future mathematicians, scientists, educators, and leaders around the world.

This first Thursday of May 2026, May 7th, we celebrate the wonders of space exploration, developments, and advancements in aerospace! 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆! 🛸

The UP SMMART joins the world, or the space rather 👀, in commemorating all historical quests in outer space that led to the discovery of what we initially thought was unknown. ⚫️

This Space Day, may our stars align and shine brightly like meteors’ colorful streaks of light, and may we have a firm presence like planets that captivate the eye, igniting appreciation, curiosity, and interest in studying astronomy to infinity and beyond! ☄️

We dedicate this day to celebrate and honor the power, contributions, and hard work of Filipino workers in the different sectors of the society and their key role in the development of the country. 🇵🇭

Taun-taon nating ginugunita at sinasaludohan ang mga manggagawang Pilipino sa natatanging araw na ito, at ito rin ang nagsisilbing palatandaan na marapat magkaroon ng isang 𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁-𝗱𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼, 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘂𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗱𝗼, 𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘆𝗼 para sa kanila tungo sa isang mas marangyang pamumuhay sa lipunang ating ginagalawan. 🌏

This day, the 30th of April, we celebrate the birthday of our National Scientist, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮! 🎉

Dr. Padilla is a 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻 who is a proud alumna of the University of the Philippines Manila, where she finished her 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 in 1981 and 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 in 2005. 🎓

One of her renowned contributions in the field of clinical genetics is being an advocate of the 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 for detecting genetic disorders. She conducted multiple studies to find out how often certain conditions appear in newborns and whether a nationwide screening program would be more efficient. These researches’ findings helped lead to the passage of 𝗥𝗔 𝟵𝟮𝟴𝟴, or the 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟰. 👶 She is also the founding president of the 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 and served as the 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗿 of her alma mater, the University of the Philippines Manila, from 2014 to 2023, and continues to teach at the same institution as a Professor Emeritus in the College of Medicine. 👩‍🏫

She also played a key role in advancing genomics in the Philippines by helping establish the 𝗨𝗣 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 (𝗨𝗣 𝗣𝗚𝗖), which brings together different fields to improve health testing, treatments, forensic work, and even crop development. She served as its 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 from 2011 to 2016, guiding its growth into an institution that later supported the government’s public health response during the COVID-19 pandemic. 🏥

In 2023, she was conferred the 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 🏅, the highest recognition for a scientist in the Philippines, which recognized her outstanding contributions in medicine and clinical genetics, especially in the Philippine context!

Here’s to celebrating the birth of a 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝗶𝘆𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮, who embodied the true essence of being an 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗱 𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗮! 🥂

This day, 25th of April 2026, we celebrate the 𝗗𝗡𝗔 𝗗𝗮𝘆! A tribute to the very code that makes each of us uniquely who we are. 🌱

This day commemorates the discovery of the DNA’s double helix structure by scientists, James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, and Rosalind Franklin. The day also covers the celebration of the completion of the 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 in 2003, whose goal is to successfully determine the sequence of nucleotide base pairs that make up the human DNA and identify all human genes. 🧬

These scientific milestones have transformed the world, shaping modern medicine, advancing scientific breakthroughs, and giving us deeper understanding of life itself. Its impact continues to touch countless lives, from improving healthcare to unlocking the mysteries of genetics. 👨‍🔬👩‍🔬
