We try to calm students down without ever establishing connection. We jump straight to "let's take some deep breaths" with a child who doesn't feel safe with us yet.

Co-regulation doesn't work in isolation. It requires felt safety, and felt safety comes from connection.

This is why Connectors are the one of the Four Core Practices of The Regulated Classroom© framework. Before you can help a student regulate, you need to build the relational bridge that makes co-regulation possible.

Connectors establish:
✨ Trust through consistent relational cues
✨ Safety through playful engagement
✨ Belonging through norm-setting and debriefing
✨ Connection through genuine presence

When a student is dysregulated, ask yourself: "Have I connected with this child today? This week? Do they feel safe with me?"
