CONCEPT NOTE

The development of the international system characterized by blurring borders and increasing interdependence has resulted to deeper levels of cooperation and bilateral and multilateral ties. With the US’ Indo-Pacific strategy and the emergence of states in Pacific Asia, geographically, this region has become the center of attention. In Asia, this has been participated by states also vying for international influence such as China, Japan, and South Korea. Most notably, Southeast Asia’s development as a region has also constantly been strengthened through improving and exploring ties with other states.

Sharing this body of water has been the Oceania and the Pacific Islands. With the turn of the decade, Asian influence has been expanding to the states in this region. Diaspora has been increasing; investment and infrastructure has also been abundant. Notably, these activities also indicate the waning Western influence in the region, replaced by that of these Asian states.

This shift, due to the changes in interstate dynamics in the Pacific Islands, has also resulted to increased interactions with Asian states in economic and socio-cultural affairs. In this regard, our maritime connections, since time immemorial has been an important aspect in Asian affairs. Hence, recognizing the importance of geography as both push and pull factors, as well as the shifts in economic and political balance of power in Asia Pacific affairs, it is high time that scholarship in the Asia-Pacific must also be developed. By examining at issues and problems in the region, this conference shall explore the relationship between Pacific Asia and the Pacific Islands.
