REMEMBERING DR. LIGAYA R. MEDINA-MIRANDA
August 27, 1923 – December 10, 2008
Today, on her 103rd birth anniversary, we remember Dr. Ligaya R. Medina-Miranda—a mother, educator, co-founder, and one of the women who helped shape the early story of Metro Manila College.
She was the wife of MMC Founder Dr. Mamerto S. Miranda, who also served as Vice-President of the Philippine Historical Association in the 1980s. Together, they raised eight children: Erlinda, Eleanor, Mamerto Jr., Evelyne, Marietta, Lyzbeth, Ma. Pilar, and Ma. Aurora—all members of the MMC Board of Directors.
Their second daughter, Dr. Eleanor M. Agapito, current President of MMC, wrote and published "A Tribute to Mama: Dr. Ligaya Medina Miranda, A Woman of Grace and Dignity" to mark her mother’s 100th birth anniversary. The book cover was designed by MMC Museum Curator Mirana Medina.
Dr. Ligaya was also the eldest sister of Filipiniana expert, and historian Dr. Isagani R. Medina, whose legacy is now preserved through the Isagani R. Medina Library-Archives at MMC.
And there is a beautiful family coincidence: August 27 was not only Ligaya’s birthday. Her youngest brother, Senen R. Medina, was also born on this same date in 1947.
Today, we remember a woman whose life became part of the foundation of an institution—and whose family continues to carry that legacy forward.
