The Microbiological Research and Services Laboratory (MRSL) of the UP Diliman Natural Sciences Research Institute, successfully hosted six student interns from the UST Department of Biological Sciences, University of Santo Tomas and the Department of Biology - CAS, UP Manila, University of the Philippines Manila, from June 15 to July 17, 2026.

Mr. Rafael Eugenio of MRSL supervised Jocelle from UST, while the PsychoLAB Project welcomed Jeng, Rie, Kiko, Rea, and Jay under the supervision of Ms. Jhanessa Luague and Mr. Joshua Veluz.

Throughout their internship, the students gained valuable hands-on experience in fundamental microbiological techniques, including microbial culture maintenance, purification and characterization, and conducting various in vitro assays. They were also introduced to basic molecular biology methods under the guidance of Mr. Michael Angelou Nada and to foundational bioinformatics workflows facilitated by Mr. Paul Christian Gloria.

The training provided the interns with practical knowledge and a deeper appreciation of laboratory research involving yeasts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Beyond developing their technical skills, the internship also exposed them to the importance of accuracy, biosafety, teamwork, and scientific discipline in microbiological research.

MRSL and the PsychoLAB Project extend their appreciation to the interns for their enthusiasm, dedication, and meaningful contributions throughout the program. We wish them continued success as they pursue their academic and professional journeys in science and research.
