It is evident in the art industry where it is commonplace to have jobs on the side to provide supplemental income; whether from selling merchandise or providing creative services parallel to one's passion. The Vargas Museum, a not-for-profit university museum, through the public program that is Raket sa Vargas recognizes the culture of side hustles among local artists and cultural workers and offers an opportunity for them to collectively share their works with the public.

Last June, as part of , participants of the inaugural Film Photo Story workshop were each given a single roll of film to shoot a photo essay over the span of a month. They processed their negatives, printed contact sheets, and marked the frames that shaped their stories.

On September 26, the Baguio Film Photo Story Artists’ Showcase took place. Participants shared their narratives and we welcomed the community for conversations. Thank you to everyone who patiently waited for this program and celebrated the evening with us! 📸

Special thanks to our partners: My Darkroom Philippines, Film Folk , Fotobaryo. We also thank Samsung for providing The Frame TVs, and Hill Station for the warm welcome, the venue, and food.

This August, the UP Vargas Museum organizes programs and projects embodying the museum’s stance that art & creative expression should engage intellectual & sensory faculties by cultivating deep attention, fostering discourse, & challenging perceptions.
•
Family Day at the Vargas, August 9:
The UP Vargas Museum Family Day is part of our "Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources," a social practice project that activates our museum garden as a site of communal conversation & exchange, for practices that cultivate a shared imagination. It is in conjunction with the long-term research project Southeast Asia Neighborhoods Collective (SEANNET) for which the museum is an institutional host, alongside partners in the Southeast Asia region. SEANNET is funded by the Luce Foundation & is organized by the Singapore University of Social Sciences & the International Institute of Asian Studies in Leiden, the Netherlands.
•
Writing workshop in partnership with Fotomoto PH for World Photography Day, August 13 and 14:
The program will feature studio visits & conversations with practitioners of contemporary photography as well as lectures, a reading group, & writing sessions facilitated by museum curator Tessa Maria Guazon & writer Jodie Jose.
•
Retrato Raket sa Vargas in partnership with Silver Fine Art Prints and Foto Baryo, August 23:
Our forthcoming edition of Raket sa Vargas will focus on photography. Raket sa Vargas is our initiative exploring alternative economies, recognizing the culture of side hustles among local artists & cultural workers, offering them an opportunity to collectively share their works with the public.
•
Collateral event for All Living Things Are Breathing Now exhibition by Kyunchome, August 26 to 30:
We will set up a repair nook inspired by Kyunchome’s work Fluffy, Fluffy where visitors to the exhibition can continue the gestures of sewing and documenting stray dogs initiated by the artist. A reparative proposition is presented through actions that expand over time & shift across locations, from coastal towns to a university museum, through the vehicle of an art project & a channel that is an art institution.

We are proud to present the Angat Sining Fellowship Exhibit, showcasing the masterpieces of our young Filipino artists who went on a mentorship journey guided by renowned Filipino visual artists, including National Artist BenCab, Mark Justiniani, Toym Imao, AG Saño, Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan, Fotobaryo, and The Mighty Bhutens.

The fellowship nurtured artistic growth while emphasizing the social impact of art. By engaging with the community and creating works that reflect Filipino culture and values, the fellows were inspired to use their talents for positive change.

This exhibit is a celebration of the fellows' achievements and a showcase of their works. Each artwork on display reflects the growth, passion, and lessons learned throughout their journey. It is a testament to the power of mentorship, collaboration, and a shared commitment to elevating the voices of young Filipino artists.

As they continue to develop their craft, these fellows are poised to make meaningful contributions to the future of the Philippine arts scene.

🎨 Exhibit Schedule:
