Congratulations to our MSI Mathlete, Helenia Moraleja, for winning the Gold Award at the Macao International Math Cup 2026!

The competition was held at the University of the Philippines, Diliman on 30 May 2026.

𝗔 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼, 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲

Part of the reason why I enjoy teaching Grade 6 is the wide variety of Singapore Math methods students can use when solving word problems.

Most people are familiar with the Bar Model, which is probably the most prominent feature of Singapore Math. And while it’s a beautiful and powerful strategy, it also has its limitations.

Here, you can see one of our students, Raphaell, exploring other Singapore Math methods, such as using ratios and drawing pictures, to make sense of challenging questions. (Yes, these are perfectly acceptable methods in Singapore’s Primary Mathematics syllabus, too! 😊)

Moments like these remind me that math isn’t about mastering one “correct” method. It's about learning how to think, reason and solve.
