FAYHS Contributes to BE'21 through Bayanihan
Writer: Jorick Hinampas

Flora A. Ylagan High School's Brigada Eskwela '21 held its closing program last October 13, 2021 via Facebook and YouTube live premiere. With the theme "Bayanihan para sa Paaralan," teaching and non-teaching personnel, students, parents, and local authorities helped and donated for the school to be a clean and safe working environment. Even though most learners are still studying online, caring for each other will get us through the pandemic.

The word "bayanihan" means "being a bayan," becoming one. Today, Brigada Eskwela is the modern bayanihan. It's an annual activity led by the Department of Education where the communities, inside and outside schools, prepare everything for the opening of classes.

"Ito po ang ikalawang taon ng pagsasagawa ng kakaibang Brigada Eskwela… Ganunpaman, tayo ay naging matatag at di nagpagapi sa virus." aforementioned by School Head Mr. Noel M. de los Reyes during the program.

COVID-19 is the main reason why things changed. There was no time for everyone to adjust since everything happened so quickly last year. Now, limited face-to-face is being brought back and planned out.

Collaborations were done and partnership engagements were strengthened, complementing DepEds' effort to implement the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP).

Brigada Eskwela '21 took two months. Everyone's contributions to their nearby schools are essential to deliver quality basic education.

Cleaning, learning, painting, and school materials were needed to create a proper workplace for teachers. Gadgets, gardening and health essentials, emergency kits, and supplies are for the environment and everyone's safety while doing online learning.

A lot of changes were made to different parts of FAYHS. From the cleaning of restrooms, organizing faculty rooms, to cutting excess tree branches in the campus garden.

Donations and support were all sent for the benefit of our beloved school. With the help of the SSG, FAYHS-FEA, Alumni Association, Brgy. Central, GPTA, and Armed Forces of the Philippines, we became one to make the most out of this "bayanihan."

Adaptation to the new normal was difficult for most online learners. For teachers, struggles were harder. But we made it through a year of distance learning, no doubt that it can be done again.

“It’s LITERALLY Just in Our Heads”
Writer/Illustrator: Louise Nikhole Jarillas

“Okay?”
“Okay.”

Does it really have to be that much? Is being happy too much to ask?

Well, to tell you the truth, the decision is ours. It’s up to us to be happy, to be contented, to be sad, and feel down. But we must remember to acknowledge our feelings. It’s not always spring. Sometimes, there’s heavy rain and thunder, lightning and floods.

But then again, there’s always rainbow after the rain, right?

It is not surprising that some people are still confused about what mental health really means. It is pertinent; however, most people characterize mental health disorders as if possessing one is bad and hazardous. It is always misunderstood. It is always judged despite the fact that it’s normal, that it’s okay not to be okay sometimes.

Mental health refers to the well-being of the mind. It impacts how an individual acts and thinks, as well as how he manages stress and his ability to react, to know, to understand, and to feel something.

Besides that simple explanation, here is how to explain what mental health means where everybody could clearly understand, and to avoid misconceptions. The mind, just like any other parts of the body, it operates. And sometimes, it malfunctions for some reason. Having mental illness is the same as having lung or heart or ge***al or bone problems. It is shown in CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, and other medical machines used to detect body problems. Yes, it has physical effects. It is REAL. Mental illness isn’t just “baliw”. Mental illness EXIST. Some say, “It’s just in your head.” YES. It’s LITERALLY just in our heads, hanging in there waiting to be diagnosed, waiting to be known and seen. Waiting to be understood.

Let us all clear the misconceptions. It’s not easy having mental problems especially nowadays, that we are in the midst of a worldwide crisis. We are facing uncertainties and we have no control about it. Many suffer from anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, and many more. Many have lost their jobs, facing financial problems, some people don’t have enough food to bring to the table, students are still adjusting in the new set-up, frontliners are tired, and many didn’t make it. Just surviving this fight is enough. Having food in your table, having a place to stay, having the advantage, is more than enough. Let’s acknowledge our privileges. Not everyone is that lucky to even have one meal. Some barely survive a day.

As per this day, as we celebrate the World Mental Health Day, we should all be united and help one another. Lifting someone up won’t bring you down. Let us check up on our friends, families, and acquaintances. Ask them if they’re doing well. Don’t let your day be ruined, stop worrying about what’s going to happen in the future. Start focusing on how you can pass through the day, because some are so unfortunate for not making it. Understand your feelings, don’t degrade other people. It doesn’t hurt to tell compliments. Just saying “Kumusta?” is enough. It will surely make someone else’s day.

The lyrics from Taylor Swift’s “The 1” - “If you never bleed, you're never gonna grow” - says it all. There’s no need to explain.

They say, when you’re having a bad day, it stays as a bad day. It’ll never be a bad life. It’s not yet the end. Remember, every end is a new beginning.

Not of all of us are facing the same problem, but certainly, we all have one goal, and that is to survive. In these trying times, let’s keep on trying. Let’s be kind. Stop the fight and start the love. Understand each other. Read one’s chapter, embrace her marks, and drink coffee together. Accept his dark past and listen to her untold stories. Be each other’s firefly as you wander the forest. Be one’s umbrella when the rain starts pouring. Let’s be each other’s shoulder, let’s fix ourselves. Let’s all climb mountains wearing heels for a cause.

Protect each other’s mental health. Come on, let us all make it until the end.

Today is Mental Health Day
Writer: Nicole Ann Alcantara

Today we are celebrating World Mental Health Day. Aimed to raise awareness and spread education about taking care of our mental health, Ii is a special day to validate our feelings and emotions especially in this time of pandemic.

It is celebrated every year on October 10, worldwide. This day helps a lot of people be kind to themselves. According to studies, the majority of the people living with mental health problems in the low-and middle-income countries do not get adequate treatment. That is the reason why having a mental health day helps out those who need a day off.

Mental health is important for each and every one of us. It doesn't matter if you are a doctor, student, a parent or someone who is stable enough. Spreading awareness to everyone is a must to make them feel valued and important.

Gen Z’s who are teenagers at the moment normalizes self-diagnosis that leads them into danger. Professionals do not recommend self-diagnosis to anyone, not just for teenagers. It always leads to wrong assumptions and negative emotions.

In this time of pandemic, many are struggling and finding it hard to cope up with their mental condition. One example are the students. After living a normal life before, a pandemic hits the country and makes them study online. They did find it hard to live a new normal life that is mostly in their house.

Multiple cases of su***de due to online classes were reported in the Philippines. DEPED was aware but the online studying of the students continued. In this case, we cannot tell the capacity of someone’s emotion and feelings. So, what might be the reason why it is still happening?

Pressure, depression, anxiety and unhealthy mindset could lead students to high risk. Some already made their choice. Some can change their choice for the better. But most of the students don't have one.

That is why organizations and volunteers for mental health awareness are very important. They give knowledge about dealing with an unhealthy mind and making them feel that their feelings are valid.

This day is one of the examples of giving a hand to those who are in need mentally. Showing love and spreading guidance about our health can save a lot of us. The advocacy and lessons they are giving is an important understanding.

Educating someone does not mean waiting for the mental health day awareness. We can always give advice to others but let them know what you are only capable of. It's always best to ask for help from the doctors and professionals. We should always take good care of our mental health like how we take care of our physical health.

FAYHS Celebrates World Teacher’s Day
Writer: Nicole Ann Alcantara

The FAYHS Supreme Student Government prepared an entertaining party virtually to celebrate the special day of our teachers. They made sure that our beloved teachers would enjoy it, which they did.

The virtual celebration was held last October 6, 2021 with our principal Mr. Noel Delos Reyes opening the program. The president of our SSG 2020-2021, Michael Angelo Capiral spoke to assure that our attendees will appreciate the program.

The enjoyable intermission numbers of the students were loved and treasured by our teachers and principal throughout the party. But the celebration didn't end there. The very active teachers joined the games prepared by our SSG officers that were related to the 90’s games. The game was full of laughs and teasing because of our emcees.

Every grade level's performance and video presentations surely touched the hearts of our teachers. Dancing, singing and every message they received from us made them smile.

Seeing those gorgeous expressions on their faces was very heartwarming. We, as students, learning things from them is a big deal for our educators. What more to admire them and prepare a celebration for them?

Pandemic didn't hinder them to create a party for our deserving mentors in life. Celebrating their day and their accomplishments in this way is very remarkable. This new acknowledgement for them is undoubtedly accessible and safe for all of us. We might think it is the most boring party to have happened, but the thought and the plan of making the celebration possible was something special.

The quote “a teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a heart” is indeed true. Who else will have more patience for our unbearable behavior? No one is to blame for having a difficult attitude of ours. But having a respectable teacher and mentor in life is certainly something more.

The party that was celebrated last October 6 happened to be one of the teachers’ happy moments. It was gracefully ended by our SSG Adviser, Mrs. Maria Babylou Caramonte through her closing remarks.

To sum up, every professional should be appreciated in different ways. Being someone successful and helping others is something to celebrate for. It doesn't matter what you do and who you work for, being happy and contented is all that matters.

Wondering how the country had the first internet connection?

It’s a great Monday because on this day back in 1994, na-establish ang kauna-unahang internet connection sa bansa all thanks to Engr. Benjie Tan!

To quote: “As of March 29, 1994 at 1:15 am Philippine time, unfortunately 2 days late due to slight technical difficulties, the Philippines was FINALLY connected to the Internet via SprintLink.”

Without him, we wouldn’t be experiencing the internet!
