STOCKING OF NATIVE CATFISH IN ONE OF PARTNER DSWD-SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD PROGRAM’S BENEFICIARIES - INAGAWAN 4PS SLP ASSOCIATION

The NC-Breed Project team conducted another round of site evaluation following the completion of the structures intended for the Inagawan 4Ps SLP Association’s sustainable livelihood initiatives in preparation for the upcoming catfish grow-out operations. The team also stocked an initial 1,000 pieces of Native Catfish fingerlings to orient, familiarize, and let the association members gain hands on experience on the day-to-day operations associated with catfish culture and aquaculture in general. The stocking proper will take place in the 2nd week of October.

With the funding support of our partner DSWD-Sustainable Livelihood program, the association managed to establish a robust production facility which could potentially enable them to sustainably produce catfish and other aquaculture species provided they work together in achieving their shared goals.

We are proud and privileged to be an integral part of this impactful and meaningful endeavor which could potentially spur economic activities, unite communities, contribute to food security, and change people’s lives for the better.

INITIAL ENGAGEMENT WITH LGU PARTNER FOR FUTURE POLICIES AND INITIATIVES TOWARDS THE CONSERVATION AND AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENT OF NATIVE CATFISH

Following previous discussions and engagement with the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Unit (FARMU) of LGU Narra on developing policies and a resolution aimed towards the conservation of the Native Catfish, the NC-Breed project team has finally taken the first step towards this goal by stocking an initial 2,000 pcs. of Native Catfish fingerlings in a natural waterway as a trial run to obtain baseline information which could prove beneficial for future restocking activities. This is being overseen by no less than the Municipal Mayor himself, Hon. Gerandy Danao with the assistance of the FARMU headed by Mr. Noli Dieron.

This is just the beginning. With LGU Narra eyed as a pilot implementation site, we are looking forward to future engagements and initiatives for the conservation and aquaculture development of the Native Catfish, one LGU at a time.

MINDANAO STATE UNIVERSITY – SULU VISITS NC-BREED PROJECT

A delegation from Mindanao State University – Sulu, led by its Chancellor Nagder J. Abdurahman, Ed.D., paid a visit to the NC-Breed Project facility as part of the benchmarking and MOA Signing activities with Western Philippines University.

The project team gave the delegates a tour of the NC-Breed Project hatchery and nursery facility and an overview of the project activities and objectives. An exchange on the ongoing initiatives pertaining to aquaculture on both universities were also part of the benchmarking activities. MSU Sulu, as we learned from the Chancellor and his team, have initiatives pertaining to seaweeds production as well as other high value marine products and is looking to diversify its activities pertaining to aquaculture.
