𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐇𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐀𝐘 | 𝐀 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐠𝐨

In the early 1900s, a new generation of public school buildings began appearing across the Philippines. Act No. 1801, championed by its namesake, provided ₱1 million for the construction of public schools from 1908 to 1915. American architect William E. Parsons developed several of the standard plans used for these schools. They became part of the country’s growing public education system.

Their design was shaped by the Philippine climate. Buildings were raised above the ground and commonly had high ceilings, large windows, wide corridors, and generous roof overhangs. Their shapes were either straight, L-shaped, or U-shaped, with courtyards placed in front or at the middle. Some also used wooden construction and capiz-shell windows.

International Literacy Day was observed on September 8. It reminds us of the importance of access to education and learning. This week, we look back at one of the schoolhouses that became part of that story. Can you identify the building in these four images? 𝙎𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝 serves as an important reminder of our collective responsibility to promote mental health, foster compassion, and support those who may be experiencing emotional distress.

Not every struggle is visible. Behind a smile, silence, or a simple "I'm fine," someone may be carrying challenges others cannot see.

Let's notice, ask, listen, and stay for a moment.

Let's create a safe atmosphere where people feel heard, understood, and supported by being willing to ask, "Are you really okay?" Sometimes we don't need to solve someone's problems or provide the correct answers. Just being there and encouraging them to get the help they need can sometimes have a major impact.

If you are struggling, remember that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Reaching out to a trusted friend, family member, teacher, counselor, or mental health professional is a courageous step toward seeking support.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒 | 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐆𝐍 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: 𝐏𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐔 𝐂𝐀𝐃’𝐒 𝟓𝐓𝐇 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐒 𝐉𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐘 𝐌𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐒 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃

Puerto Princesa City - The Palawan State University College of Architecture and Design (PalawanSU CAD) recently concluded Design Frontiers 2026: The CAD Design 9 Midterm Thesis Presentation, held from September 7 to 11, 2026 at the CAD Faculty Conference Area.

Led by Architecture Department Chairperson 𝐀𝐫. 𝐀𝐧𝐚 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐁. 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬, 𝐌.𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡., the five-day academic presentation brought together the 5th Year Architectural Design 9 students as they presented a total of 23 architectural thesis titles, each exploring pressing issues and opportunities that call for meaningful architectural responses.

The proposed studies covered a diverse range of architectural solutions—including educational facilities, correctional institutions, government facilities, animal care facilities, healthcare facilities, cultural facilities, research facilities, and other specialized developments. Beyond proposing buildings, the students sought to identify and address specific gaps and problems established throughout their Chapters 1 to 3, laying the groundwork for their succeeding architectural design investigations.

The presentations were further enriched by the insights of a distinguished panel of jurors composed of PalawanSU CAD faculty members and external architecture experts representing various sectors, including private practice, government, and corporate practice. Their professional perspectives provided the students with critical feedback and direction as they refined the scope, relevance, and potential architectural contribution of their respective studies.

Among the presenters, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐉𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐬. 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐚 stood out with an Exemplary Performance for their thesis entitled “Proposed Seaweed Biorefinery in Palawan.” Their presentation demonstrated a compelling intersection of research, architectural response, and Palawan’s potential for sustainable resource development.

With the Midterm Thesis Presentation now concluded, the journey does not end here. The 5th Year students will continue refining their research, responding to the jurors’ recommendations, and strengthening the architectural direction of their proposals as they move toward the Design 9 Final Thesis Presentation scheduled for November 2026.

From identifying gaps to imagining possibilities, Design Frontiers 2026 marks another significant step in the students’ journey toward transforming research into architecture—and ideas into meaningful solutions for Palawan and beyond.

The frontier has been explored. The next design is yet to unfold.
