In one of her research, Jackie, NGOHP fellow and an anthropologist specializing in Palawan studies, mentioned a particular ethnolinguistic group in Palawan that practices "kaingin" or slash-and-burn cultivation to grow rice that they deem as superior and deserving to be offered to their ancestors. These practice, however, has been banned in Palawan and is declared destructive to environment. Due to this, the culture of said community diminished and can't continue with the traditional subsistence that they have and the belief systems that they practice.
With this, Jackie mentioned that collaboration should be all about balance and align to the context of affected communities. Through collaboration, we are able to understand the practices of communities and indigenous groups and make sound judgment and tangible solutions that could accommodate to their culture and the needs of the majority.
