We often find our coaches in training talking to them selves. No they are not crazy. They are talking to their imaginary students in order to prepare for the real once.

Our new coaching video explains the process

September 2 starts our next 10 day sponsored coach training

🐠 Freediving Coaches of Asia πŸ‹

🌎 80% of the world population can not swim, thats 6 billion nonswimmers and 300.000 drownings per year. Besides that, we are killing the ocean.

FCOA has 3 missions:

1. To teach ABSOLUTELY EVERYBODY how to syurvive at sea,
2. To TEACH DIVING because those that get to love the ocean will take care of it and
3. To TRAIN COACHES, so that when they go home they will also teach their families and friends how to survive and dive.

With our mission boat Strider we sail around the world sprouting freediving communities at places they don't exist yet. We give sponsored Freediving coach trainings. Freediving is our tool to connect people to the ocean.

What makes FREEDIVING COACHES OF ASIA unique?

1 First of all, our nonswimmer program:
- We welcome nonswimmers! about 50% of our participants arrive as nonswimmer and goes home as a beginning diver.

2. Credit for existing skills
-We give credit for existing skills and past experiences. If you did an Intro elsewhere, or are an already cerified (free)diver, then you'll get a discount in propotion with your existing level.

3. No depth requirements!
Non of our lessons has a depth requirement. Our focus is on your awareness of your body, your buddy and your location. Our aim is to get you to be comfortable under water and to increase you duration (breathold time) Once your confidence and duration increases, extra depth will be a natural byproduct.

4. Our Navigation lesson is something special and gets you ready to explore with confidence. The subjects covered in this unique lesson are:
- Tidal forcasting
- Drift awareness
- Triangulation (making a fix)
- Compass use and
- Time management.

5. Our Coach training program,
In lesson 5 we get you ready to participate in further teachings. Some participants feel a bit nervouse about that initially, but after their first teaching experience they feel empowered. It's a fact that once you start participating in coaching, you will become a better buddy. You will understand your future buddies better and you'll be more able to share your knowledge and skills.

6. Discounted Scuba Certification course. If after freediving lesson 5 you like to enrole in to a scuba certification course, you will get a 4k discount.

7. FCoA is a non profit organisation, the course prices paid cover equipment use and the exspenses made by the coaches.
Once you have done your coach training with us you will never pay again to join our events as long as you participate in the teachings. The regular coaches manage to earn back their travel costs, their course fees and their investments in gear

FREEDIVING ETHICS, MYTH BUSTERS, TOURIST TRAPS & FAIR TREATMENT

As founder of Freediving Coaches of Asia I use freediving as a tool to:
1. teach survival at sea,
2. cultivate love for the ocean and
3. to teach coaches

Today I like to clear up some circulating
misconceptions, and I like to take a stand for non certified freedivers, since there are a few things I do and don't like freediving to be.

I do like freediving to be free of bureaucracy, free of regulations and free of paperwork.

I do like freedivers to feel free to state their opinions as I'm about to state mine and I do like freedivers to feel free to disagree with eachother without it causing devision.

I don't like freediving to be only for rich people or only for the elite or only for fit people.

I don't like freediving to be something that a few busines man manage to monopolize trough intimidation.

Breathhold diving is great and can literally be done by absolutely everybody, even if you haven't got a single cent, are handicapt and locked up in jail, if you can find a bucket of water you can stick you head in and your breathold journey has started.

By now there is an abundance of choice for those that like to get in to freediving.

WHAT'S THE BEST FREEDIVING ORGANISATION?

It really does not matter much, Freediving organisations are only as good as their trainers.

What matters most is that you have a pleasant connection with your trainer.

New trainers have less experience but make up with enthusiasm and patience, they often do an excellent job with complete beginners and still enjoy the little triumphs.

Experienced trainers work efficient and are good at fine tuning your skills and increasing your personal best depthes and dive times, but they are more likely to burn out on participants with mask issues and duckdive troubles.

MYTH BUSTER: WHEN YOU GO ABROAD YOU NEED A FREEDIVING CERTIFICATE.

This is a falls sales argument. When you go abroad you need a passport! It is true however that some freediving instructors will not let you participate in depth training without a freediving certificate.

MYTH BUSTER: IT'S DANGEROUS TO FREEDIVE WHEN NOT CERTIFIED

The risks of freediving are very apparent and need little explanation.
"If you dive to long you pass out and drown", beginners have a healthy human fear for this that prevents them from pushing past their limits.

In scuba diving most accidents happen during a beginers first 10 dives because the many risks are invisible and requier study and skill to be managed.

In freediving very little goes wrong during a beginers first 10 dives. Especially if the diver knows nothing at all, he won't argue with his contractions that tell him: "Go up and breath".

It's when freedivers advance and gain confidence that they start exploring there boundaries and pass out. In general, the more they think they know, the closer they dive to their limits.
(as a side note, the deeper you dive the greater the risks, and the greater the benefits of study and guidance, its good to be with someone more experienced who is comfortable with the new depthes you like to achieve)

MYTH BUSTER:
A CERTIFICATE SHOWS EXPERIENCE
Not really. A full logbook or dive journal shows experience. A certificate only shows that in the past you did a few days of dive training and at least once you were able to equalise both your ears at the same time.

MYTH BUSTER:
CERTIFIED DIVERS ARE MORE CAPABLE
It's training, study and hours at sea that increases the capability, regardless of it involving a certificate or not.
In comparison to a driving licence or scuba certificate, a freediving certificate has little practical value. To drive a car you need a license. Without a scuba certificate dive centers won't rent you gear and won't take you to the deeper divesites. But everybody can go out freediving, certified or not. However social acceptance might play a role in some dive groups.

MYTH BUSTER:
TO TEACH FREEDIVING YOU NEED A CERTIFICATE
There are no lawbook rules forbidding freediving or the teaching of it. Not here or in any other country. The risks are so low that law makers have never felt need to make rules for it. Common sense and respect for the obvious risks are the main ingredients in the safety of freediving.

MYTH BUSTER:
TO PARTICIPATE IN A COMPETITION YOU NEED A CERTIFICATE
Not necessarily, Aida requires no certification to participate in a competition, how ever you must be member of an approved club.

A more detailed explanation can be found in the following link:

FAIR TREATMENT AND ETHICS
Many Freediving schools and Instructors charge certification costs up front, even though they know the participant fail rate can be 20 to 60%.

In the last year about 20 failed participants of different certification courses contacted us, they often feel deflated and unsuccessful. Not really the fault of the instructor since they are bound by standards that often include a depth requirement.

There is a danger in feeling financialy and socially pressured to meet a depth requirement. Some participants rather rupture their eardrums then to fail their depth test.

The focus of freediving should be on awareness. Awareness of the mental state of your buddy, your position, the driftdirection, boat traffic and weather changes. Depth should come at a second place.

It can save a lot of money, time and stress to first train with a freediving group before enroling in an exspensive short certification course. Most freediving groups like to explore and play in the sea, the main objective is to have fun while staying safe, and while you play in the sea with your mates, in a very natural and comfortable way you will slowly but surely gain depthes equal to certification depth requirements.

Then here some TIPS for when you sign up for a certification course:

* Ask the Instructor for a copy of his certification card and check if he is in teaching status with his organisation.

* Negotiate to only pay certification costs after you pass!

* In case you don't pass insist that a referral form gets filled out, don't leave with nothing. Most organisations have referal forms that state what you have completed, so in case you want to continue with another instructor, there will be no overlap.

* If the school/instructor says you must obtain an exspensive book (that you feel no need for) then download it from internet and save some rainforest.
