Project HIKAYAT: Siyensya Gamit ang Wika, Sining, at Kultura (Indigenizing STEM in Philippine Basic Education through Culture, Language, and the Arts) is a three-year research initiative hosted by Philippine Normal University in collaboration with PNU North Luzon, PNU Mindanao, De La Salle University Manila, Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), the Department of Education (DepEd), the National Museum of Anthropology, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
The project aims to indigenize STEM education by documenting Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSP) from seven Indigenous Cultural Communities, namely the Ibanag, Gaddang, Kankanay, Manobo, Higaonon, Mamanwa, and Dumagat, and integrating these into the DepEd MATATAG Science Curriculum. It will develop digital glossaries, culturally grounded teaching and learning resources (including experiments, hook videos, teacher’s guides, and PISA-type assessments), a web and mobile application for curation and repository, and policy recommendations on IP Education.
We are currently inviting graduate student volunteers (preferably in Science Education, Anthropology, Sociology, Ethnolinguistics, IP Education, or related fields) from PNU, De La Salle University Manila, and Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation to assist in data collection, transcription and translation, data management, and logistics support. Volunteers will gain hands-on experience in Indigenous Research Methodologies (IRM) and Participatory Action Research (PAR), receive training from content experts, and earn credentials for “People Service” as direct beneficiaries of the project’s mentoring program.
