Father Jun was a sought after Oblate guru. In my high school graduation at Notre Dame of Katiku, the Ilocano priest spoke about the social purpose of higher education, and that was to use it as instrument for peace. With his intellectual acumen and social passion, Father Jun played an independent advisory role for the government and Moro liberation leaders going to the table for peace talks and conflict resolution. In 1998, when I convened a meeting representing Malacañang, with the provincial government, former MNLF combatants and the military generals to discuss their reintegration program, he helped calm the tense dialogue that got the parties to agree on the desired results. Everyone deferred to him. He kept his advocacy to move from peace pact to the complex tasks of building an inclusive and accountable governance. The Institute for Autonomy and Goverance he co-founded was his key platform. Following the signing of Bangsamoro Organic Law, he continued his policy advice to inform the Bangsamoro autonomous government’s long-term development strategy. Recent NDK alumni may not remember him but he played an important role in shaping the role of Notre Dame schools catalysts of peace and godwill between Muslims and Christians. Thank you, Father Mercado. Your peace footprints will linger.

We just lost one of the finest graduates of NDK. Top of his 1992 graduating class, Virgilio Soriano moved to universities and secured a scholarship in Australia to fine tune his learning. He then applied his competencies in the academe and to the broader community while pursuing his PhD. We last spotted him at NDK @50 anniversary. Unplanned, he was kind enough to share his grounded knowledge on a topic tailored for graduating students and alumni prepping to find a place in the job market: ‘How to package your CV and perform well in a job interview’. He exuded his trademark confidence and humility, yet again. We’re proud of your contribution to your family, the young minds and beyond. With a heavy heart, your alma mater and the rest of her alumni believe you’re now in a bliss in that trascendental place. Rest in peace, Virgilio.
