Yucks to Yey (Y2Y) Rolls Out Creative “Training on Recycling” in Barangay Igang

Barangay Igang, Pototan, Iloilo turned into a lively hub of creativity and environmental action on November 9, 2025 as Project Yucks to Yey (Y2Y) rolled out its third major activity: Training on Recycling. The session aimed to empower residents with practical, doable, and sustainable recycling skills they can apply at home and within their community.
Dr. Mae B. Angeles, Project Leader, kicked off the program with an engaging discussion on the recycling process, its stages, and its long-term environmental benefits. Her talk highlighted how small, everyday efforts can significantly reduce household waste and promote a cleaner, greener Barangay Igang.
The session leveled up when Prof. Noeme Robante took the floor for a hands-on demonstration. Using empty plastic bottles, cardboard, and scrap fabric, she crafted a stylish handbag, proving that “trash” can easily turn into treasure. Participants eagerly followed along, using segregated waste materials they had collected and brought a day earlier.
Grouped into teams, residents designed and created their own recycled handbags. Their outputs impressed the faculty facilitators, showcasing both creativity and heart. Each group presented their finished products, sparking excitement and pride in the community.
The activity was spearheaded by Dr. Marlene S. Gloria, Activity Coordinator and Director of the School of Education. The event also ran smoothly thanks to the dedicated faculty facilitators of WVSU-Pototan Campus School of Education.

Turning Yucks into Yey: Barangay Igang Levels Up on Waste Segregation

Solid waste isn’t just a household concern; it’s a national responsibility. Republic Act 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, reminds every Filipino community that proper waste segregation is key to cleaner surroundings, healthier families, and a more sustainable future. With this mandate in mind, the Project Yucks to Yey (Y2Y) continues to bring practical, community-friendly solutions straight to the people who need them most. On November 8, 2025, Y2Y rolled out its second major extension activity: the Training on Proper Waste Segregation for the residents of Barangay Igang, Pototan, Iloilo. The activity formed part of the project’s mission to build a community culture of discipline, awareness, and environmental stewardship.

The training, facilitated by the committed faculty of the School of Education of WVSU–Pototan Campus under the leadership of Dr. Marlene S. Gloria, blended interactive demonstrations, group activities, and real-life waste sorting challenges. The session was expertly coordinated by Asst. Prof. Noeme Robante, whose facilitation ensured a smooth, engaging, and participatory learning experience.

The activity aimed to make proper waste segregation not just a requirement but a doable everyday habit and it was presented by Dr. Mae B. Angeles, project leader.

To support their learning, participants received gloves, masks, and trash bags courtesy of SB Member Kirk Pedrajas, ensuring that every household could immediately start applying what they learned. On top of that, heartfelt appreciation is extended to SK Kagawad Randy Magbanua, whose hands-on support in preparing the venue contributed significantly to the success of the event.

Barangay Igang’s enthusiastic participation showed a genuine desire to build a cleaner and more responsible community. With RA 9003 as its backbone and Y2Y as its catalyst, the barangay continues moving forward on the path from “yucks” to “yey,” proving that environmental responsibility becomes meaningful when done together.

🎉 WVSU Faculty Wins Best Paper Award at International Conference!

Parreñas,Dr.Pablo L.Lauro and Dr.Juliet M.Seniego, esteemed faculty members of the School of Industrial Technology, West Visayas State University – Pototan Campus, brought pride and honor to the university after winning the Best Paper Award during the International Conference on Business, Education, Science, and Technology (ICBEST 2025) held on October 22–24, 2025 at the Diamond Hotel, Manila.

Dr. Dormido’s presentation titled “Evaluation of Community Livelihood Assistance Project (CLAP): As an Extension Project Initiative” stood out in the Community Empowerment and Development Session for its relevance, innovation, and impact on sustainable community development. The study highlighted the success and challenges of implementing community livelihood initiatives that empower local residents through skills training and self-sufficiency programs.

The international event, hosted by Bulacan State University in collaboration with IFERP (Institute for Engineering Research and Publication), gathered educators, researchers, and professionals from various fields to share best practices and innovations in research and extension.

In his virtual presentation, Dr. Dormido emphasized the importance of strengthening university-community linkages and ensuring that extension projects truly respond to the needs of marginalized sectors. His work was recognized for demonstrating excellence in both research methodology and community engagement.

This achievement not only celebrates Dr. Dormido’s dedication to research and extension but also underscores WVSU-Pototan Campus’s continuing commitment to transformative education and community development.

I am delighted to share the successful launching of the Yucks to Yey (Y2Y): A Waste Management and Gardening Project last October 17,2025.The event marked the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing, Stakeholders’ Orientation, and Signing of Commitment by our valued participants and partners.

My heartfelt thanks to Dr. B. Gemora, Campus Administrator; Dr. P. Pedrajas, RIE Director; Dr. S. Gloria, SOEd director, Ma'am Toledo, Activity Coordinator; the SOEd Faculty; SB Member Umalay, Kirk Pedrajas, MENRO Director Roger Peñaflorida,Mr.Gilbert Quimba, and Mr. Lene Peniel F. Acanto for their invaluable support and presence.
