Taijin Kyofusho (TKS), or "the disorder of fear," is a social anxiety disorder characterized by an intense fear of offending or embarrassing others through one's own actions, appearance, or even presence. While often confused with social phobia, TKS has a distinct focus: the individual's anxiety stems from the belief that they are causing discomfort or offense to others, rather than the fear of judgment directed at themselves. This can manifest in a preoccupation with:

Physical appearance: Concerns about body odor, facial expressions, or perceived flaws.

Behavior: Fear of making awkward movements, saying the wrong thing, or appearing inappropriate.
Beliefs and values: Anxiety that one's opinions or beliefs may be offensive or unacceptable to others.

TKS is a recognized condition listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). It is more prevalent in East Asian cultures, highlighting the influence of cultural norms and values on the expression of anxiety.

Do you or someone you know struggle with social anxiety or fear of offending others? It's important to remember that help is available.

Too close to give up...

March 4-8, 2024

As we are close to finish our internship here at Taytay sa Kauswagan (a microfinance NGO) Inc. head office, we are currently preparing for our presentation to our CED Manager on March 13. We will present the data collected during our fieldwork in three areas: Lecofada in Leon, NACTIA in Miag-ao, and ABPA in Alimodian. We will also showcase what we have learned during our industrial internship here as we move through our journey as intern students.
