Matina Central defends Unit III basketball title, advances to DCAA

Matina Central Elementary School (MCES) is heading back to the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) after winning the Unit III Basketball Boys Finals against Talomo West, 58–30, on September 8, 2026, at the Catalunan Grande Sports Complex.

The relentless defense held Talomo West to just 8 points in the opening half, giving Matina a commanding 21-point cushion, 29-8, at the break.

Consistent momentum in the paint and hard-nosed defense ended the championship game with a 28-point lead, 58-30.

Coach John Alvin C. Gan couldn’t conceal his happiness to being back bagging gold medals once again.

"We are so happy that we won gold to represent Unit III at DCAA once again. They got it through their hardwork…I think the key to our win was the players listened to us and communicated well on court,” Mr. Gan, coach of MCES Team, shared.

Assistant Coach Rudini John P. Sabanal felt nothing but gratitude for the people behind their 2-peat victory in the Unit Meet.

“We felt grateful to the team’s support, especially from the parents, school admins and teachers. We want to thank the players for doing their best. Let us win more. Now, it’s time to prepare for DCAA,” Coach Sabanal.

School Principal Dr. Gerry S. Ferraren also expressed his joy to represent the unit once again.

“They played not only to defend their title but to prove that champions are built through discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. We are proud that they will once again carry the name of Matina District to the DCAA,” shared Dr. Ferraren.

Miguel A. Forones, a Grade VI-Aquino standout, spearheaded the defending champions’ charge and earned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award after a commanding performance that helped punch Matina District’s ticket to DCAA.

With their crown intact and their DCAA spot secured, MCES now shifts its sights to the city stage, carrying the momentum of back-to-back Unit III titles and the weight of defending its reputation as champions.

To bring quality reading materials closer to learners and promote a love for reading, the City Government of Davao in partnership with DepEd Davao City brought its "Magbasa Ta" Program and Disaster Mobile Library Services to Matina Central Elementary School (MCES) on July 20 as part of its school-to-school literacy campaign for School Year 2026–2027.

The activity encouraged learners to read more by bringing books and library services directly to the school through a mobile library.
"This program gives our learners access to quality books and meaningful reading experiences even without leaving the school. We hope it inspires them to read more and develop a lifelong love for books," said Josie G. Gordo, library-in-charge.

Kindergarten learners were given an orientation by the reading ambassadors and had the opportunity to explore and experience being inside the mobile library for the first time. They browsed picture books and learned how a mobile library works.
Reading ambassadors also visited Grade 1 and Grade 2 classrooms, where they read stories and engaged learners in simple discussions about the books.

Meanwhile, learners from Grades 3 to 6 borrowed books from the mobile library, brought them to their classrooms for an hour of reading, and returned them afterward.

The "Magbasa Ta" Program is one of the City Government of Davao's initiatives to improve literacy by making quality reading materials more accessible to schools and encouraging children to develop the habit of reading at an early age.

Reinforcing its commitment to supporting schools, the Department of Education (DepEd) Davao City conducted the annual Pakig-AMBIT (Assess–Monitor–Build-Up–Implement–Task) validation at Matina Central Elementary School (MCES) on July 17 to assess the school's programs, facilities, and priority needs.
Led by Public Schools District Supervisor (PSDS) Ismael Segundo and Planning Officer Fritzie Ivy J. Dalangin, the validation reviewed the school's programs, documents, and facilities, recognizing the school’s efforts to deliver quality education despite limited resources.

"We are pleased to see the school's organized implementation of its programs and the dedication of its teachers. It is inspiring to note that despite the school's limited facilities, it has continued to conduct regular classes and implement the ARAL Program through the use of makeshift classrooms," PSDS Segundo said.
Planning Officer Dalangin likewise commended the resilience of both teachers and learners, noting that the validation also highlighted the school's pressing infrastructure and personnel needs.

"The validation confirmed the school's need for a replacement building after the yellow-tagged structure was closed following the June 8 earthquake. We also noted the need for five additional teaching items to help ease the teachers' workload," Dalangin said.
The annual Pakig-AMBIT validation enables the Schools Division Office to monitor school performance, recognize effective practices, and identify the support schools need to strengthen the delivery of quality basic education.

"We are grateful to the Schools Division Office for this validation because it gives us an opportunity to showcase our accomplishments, identify areas that require immediate support, strengthen our plans for continuous school improvement, and assure our teachers, learners, and stakeholders that we are not facing our challenges alone but with the guidance and support of DepEd," Principal Gerry S. Ferraren said.

Recognizing that a safe and healthy learning environment begins with proper sanitation, the Davao City Water District (DCWD), in partnership with the City Government of Davao, recently conducted septic tank desludging services at Matina Central Elementary School (MCES) through its Septage Management Program (SMP) on July 14, 2026.

“This program is truly God-sent because it greatly helped us in addressing the desludging of our 12 septic tanks. The staggered payment scheme significantly lightened the school's financial load, and the DCWD personnel were very accommodating in coordinating the desludging schedule to suit our needs," Dr. Gerry S. Ferraren said.

The activity marks the beginning of the school's desludging of its 12 septic tanks and forms part of MCES's continuing efforts to improve campus sanitation. It is also expected to help address the long-standing foul odor around Building 6, a concern that has affected the school community for years.

“The desludging initiative is one of the measures we are implementing to address the long-standing foul odor surrounding Building 6. We are optimistic that, together with our other sanitation efforts, it will help provide a cleaner and healthier environment for our learners and teachers," Dr. Ferraren added.

The DCWD Septage Management Program is part of the city's continuing effort to promote proper wastewater management by ensuring the safe collection, transport, and treatment of septic waste.
