Young Leaders Rise at the 1st SDO Kalinga Student Leadership Summit

From May 11–14, 2026, selected student leaders from Mananig National High School proudly participated in the 1st SDO Kalinga Student Leadership Summit held at the 103rd IB, Kapanikian, Pinukpuk, Kalinga, carrying the theme, “Strengthening Leadership Capacities for Sustainable Development.”

The delegation was composed of 10 SSLG officers, 2 YES-O officers, and 2 Barkada Kontra Bisyo (BKB) officers under the guidance of their teacher-adviser, Mr. John Onggay. Throughout the four-day summit, the student leaders immersed themselves in meaningful activities designed to strengthen teamwork, discipline, confidence, decision-making, environmental awareness, and responsible leadership.

The summit featured leadership trainings, team-building activities, workshops, motivational sessions, military-inspired drills, and collaborative discussions that challenged the learners to step beyond their comfort zones and become empowered catalysts of change in their school and community.

More than just a gathering, the event became a transformative experience for the young leaders of Mananig National High School. Armed with new knowledge, strengthened camaraderie, and inspired hearts, the participants returned home ready to lead with integrity, serve with purpose, and create positive impact among their fellow learners and the wider community.

Mananig National High School Nears Historic Opening of Senior High School Program After Successful DepEd Validation

DUGPA, PINUKPUK, KALINGA — May 6, 2026 — Hope and excitement filled the community of Dugpa as Mananig National High School successfully underwent a major validation activity conducted by the Department of Education Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) Regional Inspectorate Team in line with the proposed opening of its Senior High School program.

The validation forms part of the ongoing initiative of the Department of Education Schools Division Office of Kalinga to strengthen and expand educational services in geographically challenged communities by aligning school classifications with the growing needs of learners and stakeholders.

Leading the validation team was Elvernice S. Fanged, Education Program Supervisor from the Quality Assurance Division, together with John Ray Bugnay of the Administrative Division. They were assisted by the Technical and Planning Team from the Schools Division Office of Kalinga headed by Estrelita Lacuesta, along with Education Program Supervisors Maribel Latawan and Jovy Dugayon, and Public Schools District Supervisor Caroline L. Baggay.

The evaluators conducted a thorough assessment of the school’s readiness through interviews, inspection of facilities, and careful evaluation of documents to ensure compliance with standards in staffing, curriculum, governance, and learning resources necessary for the opening of a Senior High School program.

Present during the activity were Teacher-in-Charge Neuford Gatan and the faculty members of Mananig National High School, who worked hand in hand in facilitating the successful conduct of the evaluation.

Strong community support was also evident as Barangay Captain Hon. Jerry Gasidan, together with other barangay officials of Dugpa, expressed full commitment to the initiative, recognizing the immense benefits the program will bring to the youth and families in the area.

The proposed opening of Senior High School at Mananig National High School is expected to become a life-changing opportunity for learners who previously had to travel long distances or leave their community just to continue their education. Once approved, the program will open doors for more accessible, inclusive, and quality secondary education for students in the upland communities of Pinukpuk.

Behind this remarkable achievement is the dedication and vision of former school principal Mrs. Evangeline P. Abbacan, regarded by many as the brilliant mind behind the extensive preparatory work that paved the way for the successful validation. Although she was unable to attend the activity due to equally important commitments, her leadership and unwavering dedication were highly acknowledged by the school and community stakeholders.

With the successful completion of the validation, optimism now grows among educators, parents, students, and local officials as they await the official approval for the opening of the Senior High School program in the coming school year.

Our journey began at Dupagan ES and Dugpa ES for the early registration of incoming Grade 7 learners, welcoming them as they prepare to take their next step toward Mananig NHS.
From there, we went beyond the classrooms and into the homes of our learners—especially those who sometimes struggle to come to school—so we could listen, understand, and reach them where they are.
Along the way, we witnessed the everyday reality our students bravely face: long and winding roads, rugged paths through cornfields, muddy trails during the rainy season, and the Mananig River, which they must cross daily. When the rains come, the river swells, turning their journey to school into a dangerous challenge.
Seeing this reminds us that education for our learners is not just about lessons and classrooms—it is about courage, perseverance, and hope.
At Mananig National High School, we choose to walk the road, cross the river, and stand with our learners—because no distance and no danger should ever stop a child from learning.

Voice of the Youth: Mananig NHS Sparks Leadership in School-Based SSLG Polls

​Dugpa,Pinukpuk — The spirit of leadership swept through Mananig National High School (MNHS) today, February 5, 2026, as the student body successfully held its school-based Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) elections for the upcoming school year.

​The event was conducted in strict adherence to Division Memorandum No. 38, s. 2026, which implements the national mandate for learner governance. Under the expert facilitation of SSLG Adviser Mr. John Onggay, the election was a model of order and transparency, organized systematically per grade level.

In a display of authentic civic participation, students personally cast their votes and placed them in secured ballot boxes. This process allowed every learner to experience the weight of their choice and the importance of active involvement in school affairs.

​"Today wasn't just about electing leaders; it was about empowering our students to take charge of their future," Mr. Onggay remarked. "By following the prescribed guidelines and ensuring a smooth, grade-level flow, we have set a strong foundation for the next generation of student-leaders."

MNHS Scouts Join GSP Provincial Camp in Tabuk City

Dugpa,Pinukpuk, Kalinga — Learners from Mananig National High School (MNHS) took part in the 40th Junior and 29th Senior/Cadet Provincial Camp of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) – Kalinga-Apayao Council held from January 30 to February 1, 2026.
The three-day camp was conducted at the GSP Council Campsite in Bulanao, Tabuk City, and Odbris Resort in Laya West, Tabuk City, following Division Memorandum No. 25, s. 2026, issued by the Department of Education – Schools Division of Kalinga.

The activity aimed to enhance the scouts’ leadership skills, discipline, teamwork, and sense of responsibility through various camping activities and scouting programs. Participating MNHS learners actively engaged in the camp activities, demonstrating cooperation and enthusiasm alongside fellow scouts from different schools in the division.

The MNHS delegation was supervised by their troop leader, Ma’am Denrose Palangya, who guided the learners throughout the duration of the camp and ensured their safety and active participation.

The provincial camp provided the learners with meaningful experiences that strengthened character formation and fostered camaraderie, in line with the objectives of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines.

Starting with an intensive orientation by the G**o Press at the Taga Municipal Office, our dedicated team of mentors and learners worked hand-in-hand to document the spirit of the games. We extend our deepest gratitude to our Municipal Mayor for providing the support that empowered our educators and students to tell the stories of our Kalinga athletes.

From Silence to Cheers: Rey Marquez’s fight before victory on the mat

Before the medals and loud applause, Rey Marquez faced his hardest fight at home. It was not inside the Pencak Silat arena but within his own family.

Rey is a student of Pinukpuk Vocational School. While growing up, he loved sports, but his father did not agree with his dream. His father feared that sports would only cause injuries and take Rey away from his studies. Every time Rey asked to train, he was met with doubt and worry.

Still, Rey did not give up because his love for the sport was stronger than his fear. He found ways to attend training, sometimes leaving quietly on practice days. He carried his gear with hope, believing that one day his father would understand his dream.

Behind Rey was his mother, whose support never faded. She worried about her son’s safety, but she chose to trust him. She secretly gave Rey money for competitions without her husband knowing. She believed that her son’s hard work would lead him to a better future.His mother rarely watched his matches, not because she did not care, but because she cared too deeply.

Rey’s journey in sports began in his early high school years when he joined his first competition at the CARAA meet. Even with little support at home, he continued to train, learn, and believe in himself.

Now in his final year at Pinukpuk Vocational School, Rey once again proved his strength. He won in the latest Pencak Silat competition and showed not only skill but also discipline, patience, and years of sacrifice. Every medal he earned carried a story of silent struggle and strong faith.

The most powerful moment did not come when he won. It came when he heard a voice from the crowd calling his name. For the first time, his father was there. He was shouting and cheering with pride. The man who once feared sports was now Rey’s biggest supporter.

In that moment, Rey did not just win a medal. He won acceptance. His father finally understood that sports did not weaken his son. It made him stronger.Rey Marquez’s story is more than a sports story. It is a story of patience, a mother’s quiet courage, and a father’s change of heart.

From secret training days to public victories, Rey’s journey reminds us that dreams are worth fighting for. Sometimes, the greatest win is hearing the proud cheer of those who once doubted you.

More Than a Coach: Rogelio Poking’s Winning Touch Lifts Pinukpuk Boys to Provincial Glory

Behind every winning team is a coach whose dedication goes beyond medals and trophies.

One of them is Mr. Rogelio Poking, head coach of the Pinukpuk Elementary Boys’ Volleyball Team and a teacher at Dupagan Elementary School in Bayao, Pinukpuk.

Coach Rogelio began his journey as a volleyball coach in 2003, even before becoming a permanent teacher. Despite the challenges at the time, he continued to serve, driven by his deep love for volleyball and strong commitment to training young athletes.

During the Kalinga Provincial Meet held in Pinukpuk from January 14 to 17, 2026, Coach Rogelio experienced a meaningful moment.

On the same volleyball court where he once trained a young pupil years ago, he met a youth he had once molded again—this time, no longer as a player.

Shaira Mae Bali, once his elementary setter, now stood before him as a Licensed Professional Teacher. Their reunion was both touching and inspiring.

In an interview, Shaira Mae shared that Coach Rogelio was the best coach she ever had. She said that although he was strict during training, he always encouraged his players. Before, she lacked confidence in herself, but her coach believed in her.

He told her, “Sika agsetter ta mas kayam, i-train ko sika.” Because of his guidance and comforting words, she gained confidence and reached the provincial level as a setter during her elementary years.

For Coach Rogelio, meeting his former pupil again during the Provincial Meet was a moment of pure happiness. He shared that seeing his players grow and succeed—not only in sports but also in life—is the greatest reward of being a coach.

His dedication once again bore fruit as the Pinukpuk Elementary Boys’ Volleyball Team emerged as champions of the Provincial Meet.

According to Coach Rogelio, winning starts with values. He believes that an athlete must possess determination, interest, and self-discipline. Through passion, discipline, and commitment, Coach Rogelio Poking continues to be the strong force behind every victory of the Pinukpuk team.
