๐ŸŒฟ Cytokinins: The Cell Division Hormones

Cytokinins are a group of plant growth regulators that primarily stimulate cell division (cytokinesis). They are mainly synthesized in the root apical meristems and transported to other parts of the plant through the xylem. Cytokinins play an essential role in shoot growth, leaf expansion, delay of senescence, nutrient mobilization, and overall plant development.

The first naturally occurring cytokinin to be identified was Zeatin, which is abundant in maize (corn) kernels.

๐ŸŒฑ Site of Synthesis
๐Ÿ”น Produced mainly in the root apical meristems.
๐Ÿ”น Also synthesized in developing fruits, seeds, and young leaves.
๐Ÿ”น Transported from roots to shoots through the xylem.

๐Ÿงฌ Types of Cytokinins

๐ŸŒฟ Natural Cytokinins
๐Ÿ”น Zeatin โ€“ The most common naturally occurring cytokinin.
๐Ÿ”น Isopentenyl adenine (iP).

๐Ÿงช Synthetic Cytokinins
๐Ÿ”น Kinetin.
๐Ÿ”น Benzylaminopurine (BAP or BA).

๐ŸŒ Functions of Cytokinins

๐ŸŒฑ 1. Stimulate Cell Division
๐Ÿ”น Promote cytokinesis in actively growing tissues.
๐Ÿ”น Essential for plant growth and development.

๐ŸŒฟ 2. Promote Shoot Growth
๐Ÿ”น Stimulate the growth of axillary buds.
๐Ÿ”น Encourage branching by reducing apical dominance.

๐Ÿƒ 3. Delay Leaf Senescence
๐Ÿ”น Slow down the aging of leaves.
๐Ÿ”น Maintain chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity for a longer time.

๐ŸŒพ 4. Promote Nutrient Mobilization
๐Ÿ”น Help transport nutrients to actively growing tissues.
๐Ÿ”น Support the development of young leaves, fruits, and seeds.

๐Ÿงซ 5. Tissue Culture
๐Ÿ”น Widely used in plant tissue culture.
๐Ÿ”น A high cytokinin-to-auxin ratio promotes shoot formation.

๐ŸŒพ Agricultural Applications
๐Ÿ”น Enhance branching in crop plants.
๐Ÿ”น Delay leaf yellowing after harvest.
๐Ÿ”น Improve micropropagation in tissue culture.
๐Ÿ”น Increase crop productivity and plant vigor.
๐Ÿ”น Promote shoot regeneration in horticultural plants.

โš ๏ธ Key Facts
๐Ÿ”น Cytokinins work opposite to auxins in controlling apical dominance.
๐Ÿ”น They interact with auxins, gibberellins, ethylene, and abscisic acid (ABA) to regulate plant growth.
๐Ÿ”น The auxin-to-cytokinin ratio determines whether roots or shoots develop in plant tissue culture.

๐ŸŒŸ Did You Know?

๐ŸŒฝ Zeatin, the first naturally occurring cytokinin discovered, was isolated from immature maize (corn) kernels. Cytokinins are widely used in plant tissue culture to produce large numbers of healthy plants from a small piece of tissue.
