10월 9일은 한글날이다. 한글날은 한글을 창제해서 세상에 펴낸 것을 기념하고, 한국 글자의 우수성을 기리기 위한 국경일이다. 세종대왕은 1443년 한글을 창제하고 1446년에 반포하였다. 세종대왕이 한글을 만들 당시에는 ‘훈민정음’이라 불렀다. ‘훈민정음’ 은 ‘백성을 가르치는 바른 소리’라는 의미로 세종대왕이 백성들을 사랑하는 마음이 담겨있는 문자라는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 과학적이고 창의적으로 만들어진 훈민정음은 우수한 문자라는 것을 세계적으로 인정받았고 1997년 10월 유네스코 세계기록유산으로 등록되었다. 한글은 누구나 쉽게 배울 수 있고, 글을 쓰며 자신의 생각을 자유롭게 표현할 수 있게 해 준다. 한글은 일제 식민지 시기에 위축되었던 민족정신을 북돋우고 되살리는데 큰 도움을 주었다. 오늘날 한국이 여러 분야의 학문적 발전을 이루고 경제적으로도 높은 수준에 이르러 일정한 국제적 지위를 확보할 수 있었던 것은 한국인에게 한글이라는 글자가 있어 동력원이 되었기 때문이라 할 수 있다. 그러므로, 한국인들은 한글날에 태극기를 게양하여 한글의 창제와 그 우수성을 기리고 그 고마움을 마음에 새기며, 한글과 한국어의 발전을 다짐한다.

Hangeul Day, which is celebrated on October 9, is a national holiday to commemorate the birth of Hangeul and the excellence of the Korean writing system. King Sejong the Great (세종대왕) created the writing system in 1443 and promulgated it three years after. When Hangeul was first created, it was referred to “Hunminjeongeum,” which means "the proper sound for the instruction of the people” – a demonstration of King Sejong’s love and concern for his people. The scientifically and creatively invented writing system was recognized worldwide and inscribed in the prestigious UNESCO Memory of the World list in October 1997. Hangeul’s structure makes it easy for anyone to learn, write, and express their thoughts freely in Korean. Through the years, it has helped in boosting the nation’s patriotic spirit, especially during the Japanese colonial period. Today, as Korea continues to make great strides in achieving economic development and excellence in various fields, Hangeul remains a driving force and a source of pride for the entire nation. On this special day, Koreans display the National Flag (Taegeukgi) outside of their homes and honor their rich cultural tradition by pledging to contribute to the development and preservation of Hangeul and the Korean language for the future generation.

한국의 독립 기념일: 광복절

1945년 8월 15일, 한국은 35년간의 일본 식민통치에서 벗어나 빼앗긴 주권을 되찾았다. 그래서 대한민국 정부는 매년 8월 15일을 ‘광복절’이라 하고 국경일로 지정하였다. ‘광복절’이란 빛을 되찾은 날이다’ 라는 의미이다.

광복은 한국인들이 일제의 강압에 맞서 끊임없이 저항하고 나라의 독립을 위해 온몸을 바쳐서 얻은 결과였다. 한국인들은 광복절에 집 앞과 거리에 태극기를 게양한다. 이것은 나라의 독립을 위해 투쟁한 독립운동가의 희생과 뜻을 기리고 민족의 광복을 축하하는 의미를 담고 있다. 하지만 남북으로 나뉘어진 우리 상황은 광복절을 단지 역사적 사건을 기념하는 날로 머무르게 하지 않는다. 점차 한반도의 통일과 동아시아의 평화를 기원하는 기념일로서 의미가 커지고 있다.

Korea’s Independence Day: Gwangbokjeol

On August 15, 1945, Korea regained independence after 35 years under Japanese rule. Since then, Korea celebrates its Independence Day on August 15, also known as "Gwangbokjeol" or "the day the light returned." It was the constant resistance against Japanese colonialism and the noble sacrifice made by activists during those years which led to Korea's liberation. To honor their contributions and to celebrate freedom, Koreans display the national flag ("Taegeukgi") outside their residences on this special day. Gwangbokjoel has become more than just a day to commemorate historical events, especially now that the Korean nation remains divided. It has also become a day to pray for the unification of the entire Korean Peninsula and peace in the East Asian region.
