When someone tells you a secret, it doesn’t mean you have the right to share it with others.
People share personal things with you because they feel comfortable and safe around you. So when someone opens up about their personal life, please know how to protect that trust.
Not everything needs to be passed on to someone else. Even if you say, “I only told one person,” it is still a trust that was given to you.
And don’t think a secret is insignificant just because it doesn’t seem like a big deal to you. You’re not the one going through it. The person who shared it with you is the one who knows how important or sensitive it is to them.
If someone asks, it’s perfectly okay to say, “Sorry, that’s private. I’m not allowed to talk about it.”
It’s really that simple.
You don’t have to become a source of gossip just to have something to talk about. Sometimes, being a good friend simply means knowing when to stay silent.
Because trust takes a long time to build, but only seconds to destroy.
If someone trusted you with something they couldn’t tell anyone else, please don’t be the reason that trust is broken. Not everything you know needs to be known by everyone.
