🕯 Homily: “Forming Consciences in the Light of Mercy”
Memorial of Saint Alphonsus Liguori – August 1
For Minor Seminarians, Formators, Teachers, and Staff of San Jacinto Seminary
My dear brothers—seminarians, fellow formators, teachers, and staff of San Jacinto Seminary, beloved in Christ:
Have you ever been tempted to say, “Hindi ko na alam kung tama pa ito?” That’s your God-given conscience whispering. That quiet voice inside, where the Lord gently speaks—not with fear, but with love, truth, and mercy.
Today, we celebrate Saint Alphonsus Liguori, a brilliant lawyer who became a bishop and doctor of the Church. He was known for guiding not only souls but also confessors—teaching them not to be harsh or legalistic, but to lead people to Christ with clarity and compassion.
He once said:
“God is more ready to forgive a sinner than a mother to save her child from fire.”
That is the kind of mercy that lights up the conscience.
Here in San Jacinto Seminary, one of the pillars of our spiritual formation is this: not just to follow rules—but to follow Christ with freedom of heart and purity of conscience.
This is not just an ideal. Our revised Handbook clearly outlines our seminary’s path for Conscience Formation. It says:
“A minor seminarian develops clarity of mind and purity of heart in distinguishing what is good and bad. He grows in moral sensitivity and willingly undergoes regular spiritual direction and receives the Sacrament of Reconciliation. His conscience is formed according to the teachings of the Church and the example of Christ, the Good Shepherd, as reflected in CCC 1776–1802 and Veritatis Splendor.”*
To help this happen, we have set clear and meaningful practices:
📖 Monthly Spiritual Direction (SD):
You are not alone in your moral journey. These confidential one-on-one conversations help you discern God’s will, reflect on your life, and deepen your prayer. Trust and openness are vital.
🕊 Monthly Confession (Sacrament of Reconciliation):
Regular confession—often with invited guest confessors like Fr. Monching or Fr. Mickey—is more than routine. It purifies your heart and draws you closer to the Good Shepherd.
📝 Evaluation Method:
Your attendance is recorded, not to police you, but to encourage accountability. Rest assured, what you share remains sacred. General feedback, when needed, helps your formators accompany you better—with respect and discretion.
💬 To you, my dear seminarians:
Your conscience is your compass. Listen to it. Form it. When you're tempted to lie, to blame, to choose comfort over sacrifice—pause and ask: “Is this truly of God?”
That’s not just a moment of decision. That’s the heart of formation.

Our mission is not merely correction. It is accompaniment—helping illuminate the consciences of these young men with patience, truth, and mercy.
🧹 To our dedicated staff and lay partners:
Your quiet example—your fairness, your integrity, your daily faithfulness—forms the moral environment where conscience can grow. Thank you for being co-formators in the background.
🌟 Let me leave you with three simple but powerful challenges:
1. Listen to your conscience—especially when it’s uncomfortable.
2. Form it daily through prayer, Scripture, and Confession.
3. Trust in God’s mercy. If you fall, get up. His love never gets tired.
God is not forming us to be perfect students.
He is forming us to be holy men—disciples with consciences enlightened by mercy and shaped by grace.
🛐 Let us pray:
Lord, shine Your light upon our conscience. Teach us to choose what is right, even when it’s hard. And when we fall, help us return to You with trust. Through the prayers of Saint Alphonsus Liguori, make us true sons of light, men after Your own heart. Amen.
