Student journalists from The Quill, the official student publication of the Medical Colleges of Northern Philippines (MCNP) and the International School of Asia and the Pacific (ISAP), joined the Studentsโ Crime Prevention Provincial Summit and Public Safety Symposium on September 4 at Tuguegarao City Hall as part of the 32nd National Crime Prevention Week.
Representing MCNP were Dhan Christian Viernes, Kimiko Ruiz Aroc, and Aliyah Jonacel Jacobe, while Grashela Buensuceso, Emiterio Catabian, and Raven King Mariano represented ISAP. The delegates participated in discussions on crime prevention, public safety, and the role of students in reporting and addressing threats alongside student participants from various institutions across Cagayan.
National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) Region 2 Director Ramon M. Raรฑeses emphasized the role of students in keeping institutions accountable and assisting their peers in reporting threats.
โWhen we speak of civilian oversight, it means keeping institutions accountable for you. This translates to being the eyes, the ears, and the protectors of your fellow students,โ Raรฑeses said.
The summit also featured discussions on cybercrime, campus abuse, anti-bullying measures, illegal drug prevention, digital security, juvenile justice, domestic violence, and Republic Act No. 11930 on online sexual abuse and exploitation of children.
PCOL Efren L. Fernandez II highlighted the need for stronger communication between students and local police to address barriers to reporting incidents.
Through their participation, MCNPโISAP student journalists gained insights into crime prevention and public safety while strengthening their role as partners in promoting a safer and more responsive school community. The activity encouraged them to remain vigilant, informed, and proactive in addressing safety concerns and supporting efforts to prevent and report incidents within their communities.
