Dr. Nate Zinsser’s Mental Bank Account framework highlights EFFORT as a key ingredient for building confidence. 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕: it’s not about our own effort—it’s about recognizing 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐑 efforts.

𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝑪𝑶𝑵𝑭𝑰𝑫𝑬𝑵𝑻 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬?

The simple answer is 𝐘𝐄𝐒 - the more 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 answer is… it isn’t really our choice but our children’s choice. All we can do is 𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐃𝐄 and 𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐄 them in their 𝒋𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔.

I was part of the organizing team for a Workshop today on 𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐵𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝐿𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑟 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑏𝑒 and one of the topics was on “𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞” by Coach Rommel. As I was listening to the part about the Mental Bank Account and ESP Deposits - I realized that this is 𝐒𝐎 𝐅𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐎𝐎!

Of course being the geek I am, I researched more on it and discovered that Dr. Nate Zinsser actually introduced this framework/guide/concept of The Mental Bank Account. He is a psychology expert on human performance (𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝑨𝑫𝑼𝑳𝑻 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 - 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝑯𝑼𝑴𝑨𝑵 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆).

And now I am in this 𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑏𝑖𝑡 ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒 of applying his framework in the child development paradigm. I am 𝒔𝒐 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 so stay tuned for a series of a few more posts so I can explain to you what the Mental Bank Account is and 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐄𝐒𝐏 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃.

𝐈 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐬𝐨 𝐨𝐥𝐝 😅

A week ago for 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲, I had the pleasure to be invited to the Missionary Society of St Paul House of Formation in New Manila, to facilitate a workshop for their teenage scholars about 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 & 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 - and in Teacher Judith fashion - it was 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒖𝒏! 🤩

It was a really 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐟𝐮𝐥 session where I got to 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬 and I shared a lot of 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 for the scholars - while following my 𝑯.𝑨.𝑷.𝑷.𝒀. 𝑭𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌!

We actually did simulations of some of the strategies I used to do in Highschool and University! Took me back to the times where 𝐈 𝐣𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 (𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝐶𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑙 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑖𝑟𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛, 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑛 𝑚𝑦 𝑎𝑐𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑐𝑠, 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑗𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠, 𝑒𝑡𝑐.)! I can’t believe I survived all that - but I am happy the strategies I used won’t just stay with me and go to waste.

Most of these scholars have been my students in catechism since 2018 - 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟔 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐰!! They’ve changed so much and yet are still the same sweet kids I’ve had the pleasure of teaching. 𝐼𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑚𝑦 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡 to see them 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒑 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒄𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒃𝒚 𝒅𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕. 💜

It was also a testament to the fact that kids of this age bracket (12-21) certainly can 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬, 𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞!

Yesterday was the start of a 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 that I am so honored to be part of with other Coaches from different parts of the world - 𝑈𝑆, 𝑈𝐾, 𝐹𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝑀𝑎𝑙𝑡𝑎, 𝐶𝑦𝑝𝑟𝑢𝑠 𝑒𝑡𝑐.!
