Last November 19, UA&P Kallos concluded the semester’s series of Arts Lab Hangouts with 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐉𝐚𝐳𝐳: 𝐀 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐀 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭 🖼️

The open jam session and guided discussion featured Sir Tots Tolentino, a passionate saxophonist in the Filipino Jazz scene. Attendees were able to inquire about how Filipino jazz was uniquely Filipino, and some even had the opportunity to jam with him.

Jazz improvisation begins when all the musicians present agree on a tune and its corresponding chord progression. Chord changes serve as a roadmap for the players, while the rhythm section provides harmonic and rhythmic support. This builds up into a musical conversation, as each musician takes turns in contributing melodic lines in real-time.

Last November 12, the Arts Lab Hangouts featured Sir Rosh Uttamchandani, who held 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞: 𝐀 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐟𝐢 𝐏𝐨𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐲 🌊

From tackling the works of Bulleh Shah to Rumi, learning about Sufi poetry and its themes on navigating identity, finding love, and transcending dichotomy was an eye opener for all of us. Truly, it was 𝙢𝙖𝙯𝙖 𝙖𝙖 𝙜𝙖𝙮𝙖!

Partnered with ViARE, the session was led by Dr. Joem Antonio. An impromptu script reading was performed on selected scripts written by the Creative Writing students.

Last October 1, UA&P KALLOS held their third Arts Lab Hangout: 𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐚 🎥📸

There, we watched three short films: Excuse Me Miss, Miss, Miss (2019), Kampana (2024), and Living Things (2020). Afterwards, Mr. Jaime Benitez and Mr. Art Vito Cruz led an engaging discussion about the three films, where everyone was able to give their thoughts on what they have seen! 🎞️📽️

We had so much fun watching and discussing the movies, and we hope to see you in our next hangouts! 🫵✨

Last September 24, UA&P KALLOS held their second Arts Lab Hangout: 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐜: 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐚𝐦 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧! 🎶

The attendees sang their hearts out with plenty of unique and varied songs! Some even decided to give their performance extra flare by bringing in their own instruments! 🎸

Plenty of fun was had with the students singing and showing their talents, and we hope you come again to one of future hangouts! 💖

Come and jam with us with very special guest Tots Tolentino, a renowned figure in the Filipino Jazz scene! This is our first Hangout Event where we will be featuring an artist and discussing with them their craft and what makes it special! In this we will discuss with Sir Tots what makes Filipino Jazz special and how you can learn to improvise musically!

As this is also a jam session, any musicians are allowed and encouraged to bring their own instruments! 🎸
