“While a people preserves its language, it preserves the marks of its liberty.”
Our last post mentioned how love for our own language leads to progress. In this last part of this series, we want to end on a high note by showing how our own language can be used as a tool for one of the most potent forms of progress, social and political change.
In fact, it has been done many times in the past, from the Philippine Revolution to the People Power Revolution, many powerful ideas have been shared in the perpetual fight for freedom and democracy. As a people, we have used our language to express our deepest aspirations for a just and equitable society. Our own history is a testament to the power of language as a tool for resistance and change so when we use our mother tongue to communicate, we tap into a wellspring of cultural and historical knowledge that can inspire us to change Filipino society for the better.
In this regard, the Filipino language is immensely powerful as it is filled with the very words used to vanquish those who have oppressed us in the past. Our history is one filled with many sufferings, and through time, we have gotten better at verbalizing and characterizing this struggle through language. Indeed, our Filipino language is a symbol of our resilience as a people, and this should never be forgotten as the fight for a better Filipino society is never over.
Together, let us fully embrace the Filipino language with love and pride as we continue to nurture and develop it for the future generations, ensuring that it remains a source of inspiration, unity, and progress for our nation!
