Kaunting ulan, bumabaha โ€” dahil nga ba ito sa mga mamamayan? o dahil sa hindi makatarungang paggamit ng pondo ng Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Sabi sa karatula ng DPWH โ€œThis is where your taxes goesโ€œ ngunit ang katotohanan this is where your taxes ghost โ€” imbis na mailigtas ang bayan mula sa trahedya, ang pera ng sambayanan ay minumulto!

September 21: A Flood of Voices Against Corruption

Every year, September 21 is remembered as the day martial law was declared in 1972โ€”a painful reminder of authoritarianism, censorship, and abuse of power. However, this year has taken on renewed meaning. On this day, Filipinos once again take to the streetsโ€”not just to remember the dark shadows of the past but to confront todayโ€™s crisis: massive corruption in government projects, particularly those meant to protect communities from flooding. The so-called โ€œTrillion Peso Marchโ€ is more than a commemoration; it is a declaration that citizens will no longer be silent where public funds are lost to ghost projects, substandard works, and questionable deals.

The โ€œTrillion Peso Marchโ€ is not just about billionsโ€”or even trillions of pesos allegedly wasted. It is about trust. Every peso misused is a peso stolen from affected families, from students who need classrooms and from communities longing for safety and progress. Worse, corruption in flood-control projects means lives are at risk when heavy rains come and infrastructure fails. Allegations of โ€œghostโ€ flood-control projects worth billions, coupled with substandard work and suspicious allocations, strike a painful chord in a country battered by typhoons and rising sea levels. The government has assured the public that no one will be spared in investigations, but Filipinos have heard such promises before. Whatโ€™s different is that the people are watching, demanding, and acting together.

This September 21, 2025 in UP Diliman, where students staged local protests, to the People Power Monument, where Akbayan Rep. Chel Diokno declared that the peopleโ€™s cry is for accountability, and down to Luneta Park, where thousands gathered under strict police monitoring, the message is clear: Filipinos are united to demand honesty and justice. Groups from the legal profession, church, and civil society, will march under the banner โ€œFlood in Luneta,โ€ while the Makabayan Bloc called for an investigation of corrupt judges. Even online, voices grew louder, stating that as long as political dynasties dominate, the cycle of corruption will continueโ€”urging voters to raze these dynasties in the 2028 elections. The scale of these protests matches their symbolism. September 21 has long been associated with abuses of power, and rallying on this date ties the memory of martial law to the present failures of the system. Just as dictatorship once silenced the nation, corruption today robs citizens of safety, resources, and trust.

It is important to note that these rallies were not acts of rebellion but of responsibility. Citizens across generationsโ€”students, professionals, activists, and faith leadersโ€”stood together to remind government officials that democracy is not just voting; it is active vigilance. Their demands are not radical: transparent audits, swift investigations, and genuine accountability. To dismiss these calls as mere noise would be an error, repeating the arrogance of past leaders who rule out the peopleโ€™s will.

Of course, these rallies must remain peaceful, and the government must ensure that demonstrators are heard, not harassed. What the people demand is not chaos but clarity: independent audits, release of project details, and swift punishment for those proven guilty. Public outrage is not an obstacle to governanceโ€”it is a lifeline, a signal pointing to where reform must begin.

The September 21 movement is more than just a protestโ€”it is both a warning and a pledge. It warns those in power that corruption, no matter how carefully concealed, will be exposed. It also pledges that Filipinos will never give up their right to demand justice and good governance. 53 years after martial law, the call for accountability remains alive. Today, the battle is not against dictatorship but against dishonestyโ€”and once again, the Filipino people stand ready to fight.
