Listen up crayfish farmers!! 🦞

Why is segregation important in crayfish farming?

Is it necessary?

Here's why!!

Segregation (separating crayfish by size, age, or condition) is very important in crayfish farming because it directly affects survival, growth, and profit.

1. Prevents Cannibalism
Crayfish are naturally aggressive, especially during molting (when they shed their shell and become soft). Larger crayfish can easily eat smaller or weaker ones if kept together. Segregation reduces this risk.

2. Improves Survival Rate
By separating juveniles, breeders, and market-size crayfish, you protect vulnerable groups. This leads to more crayfish surviving until harvest.

3. Promotes Faster Growth
When crayfish are grouped by similar size, they don’t compete unfairly for food. Smaller crayfish get enough nutrients, allowing them to grow faster and more evenly.

Why crayfish?

Relying on a single source of income is risky during crises.

Crayfish farming provides:
✔️ Extra income
✔️ Food supply backup
✔️ Opportunity for small business growth

Crayfish farming in the Philippines is practical during crises because it is low-cost, space-efficient, climate-suitable, and income-generating, while also helping improve food security.

Why is crayfish a better aquaculture than others??

1. Hardier and More Disease-Resistant
Compared to shrimp (which are very sensitive), crayfish are:
More tolerant to water condition changes
Less prone to mass die-offs

🌱 2. Flexible Feeding
They are omnivores, so feeding is easier:
Vegetables (kangkung, lettuce)
Commercial pellets
Organic waste (in moderation)
