A fuel contamination problem in Fiji is forcing airlines to rethink how they operate flights to and from the island nation.

Qantas and Virgin Australia have been affected by an aviation-fuel supply issue at Nadi International Airport, with airlines being advised that fuel supplies could not be guaranteed. ABC reports the contamination may be linked to an excessive electrical charge in a batch of stored fuel, although Fiji authorities have not confirmed the cause.

Virgin Australia has cancelled some services and has been arranging refuelling stops in places such as New Caledonia and Vanuatu so aircraft can complete their journeys. Pilots have also been instructed to carry additional fuel to Fiji, with one pilot telling ABC that more than 20 tonnes may be needed for a return flight.

Qantas has taken a different approach, replacing its usual Boeing 737 with a larger Airbus A330 on the Sydneyโ€“Nadi route, allowing the aircraft to carry enough fuel to avoid refuelling in Fiji.

Fiji Airports says Nadi International Airport remains open and operational, with safety and operational procedures being maintained. Airlines have been told the situation could potentially continue until the end of August, while additional fuel delivered to Nadi undergoes testing and approval.

Newly released footage captures the final moments before a devastating collision between a small plane and a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter.

The Cessna 150, piloted by Dr. Paul Sokoloski, 57, of Hershey, was traveling along the runway when it suddenly veered sharply to the right for reasons that remain under investigation. The aircraft then struck a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter that was hovering several feet above the grass during a routine training exercise.

Police said the helicopter crew could not see the approaching Cessna from behind. The impact destroyed the helicopter's main rotor system and caused it to invert, leaving two troopers trapped inside the wreckage.

Despite his injuries, Corporal Bryce Corman kicked out a window and helped Trooper Jason Mills escape. Both troopers were hospitalized and are expected to make full recoveries, with one already released.

Dr. Sokoloski, an emergency-room physician with Penn State Health and an experienced aviator, was the Cessna's sole occupant. He sadly died in the collision.

The NTSB is leading the investigation into why the Cessna suddenly veered from its path and how the two aircraft came into conflict.

Our deepest condolences go to Dr. Sokoloski's family, friends and colleagues, and our thoughts are with Corporal Corman and Trooper Mills as they continue their recovery.

On May 24, 1988, the Boeing 737-300 was carrying 45 people from Belize City toward New Orleans when it encountered a severe thunderstorm. Heavy rain and hail caused both engines to lose thrust at roughly 16,500 feet.

With no usable engine power, the crew had only moments to find somewhere to land. Captain Carlos Dardano and First Officer Dionisio Lopez worked to keep the aircraft under control while descending toward the ground.

The crew managed to restart one engine, but there was no time to return to the airport. Captain Dardano spotted a stretch of land near the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility and made an extraordinary decision: land the powerless 737 on a grassy levee.

The aircraft touched down safely on the levee, traveling at about 160 knots, and came to a stop without a single fatality. All 45 people aboard survived, although one passenger suffered serious injuries.

Investigators later determined that the engines had experienced flameouts caused by the severe weather, while the aircraft itself remained controllable. The accident became an important case in understanding engine response to heavy rain and hail.

The incident occurred on January 25, 2024, during a Batik Air flight from Kendari to Jakarta, Indonesia. For approximately 28 minutes, air traffic controllers repeatedly tried to contact the cockpit but received no response as the aircraft drifted away from its assigned route.

The co-pilot had reportedly experienced disrupted sleep before the flight, a factor investigators identified as contributing to the incident. Both pilots had nevertheless passed their routine medical and fitness checks, highlighting the difficulty of detecting fatigue through standard assessments.

Fortunately, the A320 remained stable on autopilot. One of the pilots eventually woke up, responded to air traffic control and corrected the aircraft's course. The flight landed safely, and none of the 153 passengers or crew members were injured.

The incident prompted Indonesian authorities to review pilot fatigue management and night-flight procedures, while the pilots were temporarily suspended and Batik Air was reprimanded.

No crash occurred, but for 28 minutes, an airliner carrying more than 150 people was flying with nobody awake in the cockpit. The incident remains a powerful reminder that fatigue can be just as serious an aviation safety risk as mechanical failure.

Our company owns a small boom truck we typically use for flying trusses, beams, the odd hot tub or two etc. Occasionally our local airport calls us to pick up a flipped Cessna.

My dad got to hoist a mig-17 and a 19 back in the day, but this was my first jet.

What happens to all the nav gear and other components that arenโ€™t damaged? Obviously itโ€™s a total loss, but does everything just get junked for safety?

Also how much does this plane cost? I know very little about aviation, but I enjoy learning from this sub immensely.

Those words from Captain Eric Moody became one of the most memorable announcements in aviation history.

On June 24, 1982, British Airways Flight 009 was cruising from London to Auckland aboard a Boeing 747-200 when the aircraft flew through a cloud of volcanic ash from the erupting Mount Galunggung in Indonesia.

Within minutes, all four engines lost thrust.

Captain Moody calmly informed the passengers that the crew was doing everything possible to restart them, adding his famously understated line:

โ€œI trust you are not in too much distress.โ€

Behind that calm voice, the cockpit crew was facing an extraordinary emergency. With the engines no longer producing power, the 747 began gliding toward the Indian Ocean.

The crew eventually managed to restart the engines, although one later failed again. They diverted to Jakarta and successfully landed the aircraft.

Remarkably, all 263 people aboard survived.

The incident became a landmark in aviation safety and demonstrated the devastating effect volcanic ash can have on jet engines. It also helped lead to improved procedures for detecting and avoiding volcanic ash clouds.

Captain Moody's announcement sounded almost casual, but behind those words, four engines had stopped at 37,000 feet. Few words have ever sounded so calm in the face of such an extraordinary aviation emergency.

An unusual callsign mix-up briefly put two American Eagle regional jets in the same skies under an identical aircraft identifier.

Two Bombardier CRJ-700s operated for American Airlines were airborne at the same time while using the same callsign, creating a potentially dangerous situation for air traffic controllers and pilots. The aircraft reportedly spent about 26 minutes flying simultaneously under the duplicate identification.

The problem was particularly concerning because identical callsigns can create confusion over which aircraft a controller is addressing, especially when both are operating in nearby airspace.

The incident comes shortly after another American Airlines case near Phoenix, where two flights were mistakenly assigned the same flight number, AA2482. A controller quickly distinguished them as the โ€œarrivalโ€ and โ€œdepartureโ€ and maintained separation between the aircraft.

Fortunately, no collision occurred and both aircraft continued safely. The incidents highlight why precise flight identification is so important: even with modern navigation and surveillance systems, clear communication between dispatchers, pilots and controllers remains an essential layer of aviation safety.

American Airlines is bringing back something many passengers thought had disappeared for good: seatback entertainment screens.

The airline plans to install seatback screens on more than 800 narrowbody aircraft, reversing a strategy it adopted nearly a decade ago when passengers were encouraged to use their own phones and tablets for entertainment. Retrofitting is expected to begin in 2028 and continue into the early 2030s.

At the same time, American is significantly expanding its premium cabin offering. Premium seats are expected to increase from roughly 25% to about 40% of narrowbody capacity, including more First Class and extra-legroom seats.

The move comes as American tries to close its profitability gap with rivals Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. Premium travelers accounted for roughly 30% of American's seats but generated nearly half of its ticket revenue in the second quarter, highlighting why the airline is putting more emphasis on higher-spending passengers.

American says changing passenger preferences, particularly among younger travelers, and improvements in satellite Wi-Fi have helped drive the decision to bring larger personal screens back into the cabin.

After years of telling passengers to bring their own screens, American Airlines is now putting entertainment back where it used to be: right in front of their seats.
