Ma. Francheska Carly Tumakay made her mark at the 5th Cebu Open Karate Championship 2026, earning an impressive three-medal haul in the 10–11 Years Old divisions.

She captured Gold in both Intermediate Kata and Advance Kata, then added Bronze in Advance Kumite, demonstrating her versatility across the competition.

From the measured precision of kata to the demands of kumite, Francheska brought focus and determination to every event she entered. Her three podium finishes came in a tournament that gathered 680 karatekas from Cebu, the Visayas, and other parts of the country.

A well-earned Silver Medal goes to Mich McKenzie Guardiana in the 9–12 Years Old Team Kata category at the 5th Cebu Open Karate Championship 2026, held on July 12, 2026, at the Cube Wing Atrium, SM Seaside City Cebu.

Among 680 karatekas gathered for the KPI-sanctioned tournament, Mich took to the competition floor with the discipline and concentration that kata demands. Every sequence called for control, timing, and unity, turning countless hours of preparation into a performance worthy of the podium.

Her silver medal is more than a result on the scoreboard. It is a reflection of the patience, practice, and perseverance behind every movement.

| A Double Podium Finish for Jace L. Dalde! 🥈🥉

The USJ-R Elementary Department proudly recognizes Jace L. Dalde for earning two podium finishes at the 5th Cebu Open Karate Championship 2026, held on July 12, 2026, at the Cube Wing Atrium, SM Seaside City Cebu.

Jace claimed the Silver Medal in the 9–12 Years Old Team Kata and secured the Bronze Medal in the 10–11 Years Old Advance Kumite, marking an impressive performance across both categories.

With 680 karatekas competing in the tournament, Jace took on a strong field of athletes from Cebu, the Visayas, and other parts of the Philippines. Her results speak of the preparation, discipline, and focus she brought to the competition.

| 5th Cebu Open Karate Championship 2026

The USJ-R Elementary Department proudly congratulates Jyl Margaret Albarracin for bringing home the Silver Medal in the 9–12 Years Old Team Kata category at the 5th Cebu Open Karate Championship 2026, held on July 12, 2026, at the Cube Wing Atrium, SM Seaside City Cebu.

The tournament, organized by Sports Kombat Network (SKO) in cooperation with SM Seaside City Cebu as venue partner, was a Karate Pilipinas Incorporated (KPI)-sanctioned event that brought together 680 karatekas from Cebu, neighboring provinces in the Visayas, and other regions of the Philippines.

As an open tournament welcoming grassroots athletes, varsity players, and members of the Philippine Karatedo Team, the competition provided a challenging field for young karatekas to showcase their discipline, skill, and dedication.

USJ-R Welcomes Academic Year 2026–2027 with a Mass in Honor of the Holy Spirit

To formally welcome Academic Year 2026–2027, the University of San Jose–Recoletos (USJ-R) gathered its academic community for the Mass in Honor of the Holy Spirit on August 12 at the Basak Campus, with the celebration continuing on August 13 at the Main Campus.

The celebration was participated in by the Basic Education community, together with the university’s faculty, staff, students, and other members of the USJ-R community, as they united in prayer and thanksgiving for the beginning of another academic year.

Guided by the theme, “Come, Holy Spirit, empower us to be courageous seekers and witnesses of Truth,” the Eucharistic celebration was presided over and the homily delivered by Most Rev. Dennis C. Villarojo, D.D., Bishop of Malolos, Bulacan.

A proud USJ-R alumnus of 1984, Bishop Villarojo reflected on the significance of invoking the Holy Spirit at the beginning of every school year. He emphasized that as an institution dedicated to the education and formation of the young, USJ-R continually seeks the guidance and enlightenment of the Holy Spirit.

Reflecting on the Gospel, Bishop Villarojo reminded the community that Jesus guides us toward the fullness of Truth through the presence and action of the Holy Spirit. As part of the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—the Holy Spirit enlightens our minds and hearts, helping us discern truth and live it courageously.
He also highlighted the distinction between knowledge and understanding. Knowledge concerns the facts and information we acquire, while understanding goes deeper—it recognizes the interrelatedness of these facts and enables us to create meaning from them.

As a new academic year begins, may the Holy Spirit continue to enlighten our minds, strengthen our hearts, and inspire the entire USJ-R community—especially our young learners—to become courageous seekers and faithful witnesses of Truth.

| OUT OF THE OFFICE, INTO TEAM MODE!

A day away from the usual routines, but never away from what matters. Yesterday, the USJ-R Elementary Department USJ-R SELG stepped into team mode, making space for connection, laughter, learning, and the simple moments that remind everyone that behind every role is a team that moves forward together.

It was a day to step back from the daily rush, enjoy each other’s company, and strengthen the bonds that carry the department forward.
