Today is , a day of tribute to former South Africa president and democracy icon Nelson Mandela.
Here's what Mandela said about press freedom his address to International Press Institute Congress in February 1994.
"A critical, independent and investigative press is the lifeblood of any democracy. The press must be free from state interference. It must have the economic strength to stand up to the blandishments of government officials. It must have sufficient independence from vested interests to be bold and inquiring without fear or favour. It must enjoy the protection of the constitution, so that it can protect our rights as citizens.
It is only such a free press that can temper the appetite of any government to amass power at the expense of the citizen. It is only such a free press that can be the vigilant watchdog of the public interest against the temptation on the part of those who wield it to abuse that power. It is only such a free press that can have the capacity to relentlessly expose excesses and corruption on the part of government, state officials and other institutions that hold power in society."

Makalat na bahay? Darating ang panahon na wala ng mga laruan na nakakaalat sa sahig, sa k**a, sa lamesa at sa upuan dahil malalaki na ang mga anak mo.
Sleepless nights? Pag malaki na sila, you have all the time to sleep.
Maingay na bahay? Darating ang panahon na tatahimik ang bahay at ma-mimiss mo ang ingay, sigawan, tawanan at iyak ng mga bata.
Walang katapusan na tanong kung bakit asul ang langit, bakit kailangan nating huminga, bakit gumagalaw ang mga puno? Darating ang panahon na tayo na ang hihingi ng oras sa kanila para makipagkwentuhan.
Di ka makagawa ng gawaing bahay o trabaho dahil super clingy niya? Pag laki niya, maiisip mo na sana inuna mong makipaglaro sa kanya kesa ang mga gawain na makakapaghintay naman.
Puro karga ang gusto? Dadating ang panahon na malalaki na sila at di na sila magpapakarga.
Mabagal kayo maglakad o kumilos dahil maliliit pa ang mga hakbang at galaw nila? Darating ang oras na mabilis na silang kumilos at ikaw na ang hindi makakasabay sa mundo nila.
Lahat ng to ma-mimiss mo. Kaya habang ganyan pa sila, samantalahin mo.
Pag malalaki na sila, lahat ng to hahanap-hanapin mo.
Lahat kayang makapaghintay, pero ang paglaki nila at ang oras na dumadaan, hindi.
Lahat ng akala mo na walang katapusan, meron pala.
Hihilingin mo na maibalik ang oras para maransan ulit ang mga bagay na to.
Seize and cherish every moment with them. Hug them. Kiss them. Laugh with them. Spend time with them ❤️
