An OPEN LETTER To DepEd Secretary Angara
Dear Secretary Angara,
I am writing to you with a heavy heart, echoing the sentiments of many teachers who feel overwhelmed and disheartened by the current DepEd Expanded Career Progression System. While we appreciate the intention to elevate the teaching profession, the reality on the ground is that the system is causing significant stress and, for many, a sense of career depression.
The rigorous requirements for advancement, including demo teaching, portfolio preparation, annotation forms, written exams, and interviews, have created a high-stakes environment that is more anxiety-inducing than motivating. The process feels less like a celebration of our dedication and more like an obstacle course designed to w**d out deserving educators.
The demo teaching, in particular, is a source of immense pressure. The artificial setting and the scrutiny of evaluators often fail to capture our true teaching abilities and the rapport we have built with our students over time. The portfolio preparation, while intended to showcase our accomplishments, has become a time-consuming burden, taking away valuable hours from lesson planning and student interaction.
The annotation forms and written exams add another layer of complexity, requiring us to articulate our practices in ways that often feel disconnected from the realities of the classroom. The interview process, while necessary, can be intimidating, especially for those who are not naturally gifted public speakers.
We understand the need for a robust evaluation system, but we believe that the current framework is overly burdensome and creates unnecessary stress. We implore you to consider a more holistic and humane approach to career progression, one that values our experience, dedication, and the unique contributions we make to our students' lives. A system that inspires growth, not despair.
Sincerely,
A-Z

Moses came down from the mountain and told the people what the Lord had commanded. They all said, Okay! No problem! As we shall see in a few days, that didn't last long. The Israelites said yes over and over to God, and then said, no, over and over again. So much like us! It's a good thing God forgives us over and over again. It is always interesting to read the full account of the commandments and their amplified meaning in Exodus, because it gives an idea of what the civilization was like in those days. The commandments were not all totally new as many of them were based on the code of Hammurabi. The first three commandments were new as they listed the proper behavior towards God. The other seven concerned social behavior and social structure. So, what's the difference between Hammurabi's code and the Ten Commandments other that the first three? The difference is in the why. We don't obey the commandments because the promote civility within society; we obey them because this is what God has called us to do. Regardless of the punishments proscribed in Exodus for different offenses, we are called to obey God. Period! It is the same today with Jesus law of love which calls for us to work for justice, help the poor, etc. We don't help others because it's a nice thing to do, ever though it is, we do it because we are called as Christians to take care of one another. Why do you obey, why do I? Is it because we want to avoid punishment, or because it's the right thing to do.
Loving God, as I approach this comprehensive examination, I give thanks for the knowledge and skills I have gained. I pray not just for success, but for the opportunity to showcase my understanding and abilities to their fullest extent. Fill me with optimism and confidence, and let the results reflect the hard work and dedication I have poured into my studies. I trust in your guidance and believe in a positive outcome.
Amen. 🌱🙏🫰
